Halifax Reward account(s)

Help!

I think I  know that x 3 Halifax Rewards are going to be officially allowed.

please can anyone direct me to the letter or the date that this will happen?

A friend has no internet access or smart phone and has tried to open a second account over the phone but they say 'No!' Only one per person  plus a joint.

I am sure I did not imagine the 3!

(In this case the online loophole is no good!!)

Thanks

  • The changes to the T&Cs that allowed 3 x Reward/Ultimate Reward accounts per customer went live on 01 Nov 2022: https://www.halifax.co.uk/assets/pdf/bankaccounts/pdf/bank-account-guide.pdf

I opened mine ages ago via online banking - quick and painless, and was completed in minutes. If you're not having luck on the phone, then that's what I'd suggest trying next

Sorry, this will not answer your question but worth a mention. I had to contact Halifax a while back about something. The C.S lady was looking at my accounts and questioned me about having 3 current accounts, and also asked ‘are you being paid the £5 reward on all of these accounts’. I just acted dumb and moved the conversation on.

So, at no time did she say you can’t have 3 accounts or 3x rewards, but she was obviously surprised. And yes, all my accounts opened online and all several years old now.

I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
    There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

No, as I said it's not for me- already have 3. My friend can only do it over the phone!

Sorry, I have scrolled through the pages and pages of that document and nowhere can I actually see a sentence that states you can have 3! Please can you quote it for me?

There's a table that details the number of allowed accounts

Historically when Halifax launched the (old) reward account you were allowed to have 3 accounts.

When I opened my (main) account in 2009 you were allowed 2

So if challenged- I would say it was historical!!

    Thanks so much for that

I have noted the details and will contact my friend- she's out at the moment.
I shall be advising her to register a formal complaint because they gave her the runaround on the phone on Monday this week 3 or 4 different staff told her the same thing: 1 x sole + 1 x Joint-  so they don't know their own regulations! (and she blamed me for giving her duff info!!)

It's often the case that bank staff operate on outdated knowledge and provide inaccurate information. It's also not their job to know the latest terms and conditions; it's up to (potential) customers to read, understand and accept them.

When I opened a joint account (only possible via face-to-face appointment), I was sitting in a cosy enclosed office and literally had to inform the bank clerk that what I wanted to open was allowed. She re-read the terms, remained unsure, and said "well let's see if the system lets me open it". It did.

What a load of anti-consumer claptrap. It's absolutely unacceptable (although unsurprising, unfortunately) for bank staff to prevent customers from being able to open accounts based on wrong or outdated terms and conditions.

When I have dealt with members of staff who have tried to invent terms and conditions my normal course of action is to complain. In every such instance I have been given an apology, whatever it was I was falsely told I would not be eligible for (usually a switching bonus), additional compensation (think it was £50 last time, not negotiated) and an assurance that the individual will be retrained.

@Katiehound I would recommend you get your friend to lodge a formal complaint.

Just to say that my friend did lodge a formal complaint & they gave her £40. (they were still saying the same old... one solo account etc but finally someone checked it out!)

She was on the phone for very much more than an hour so they gave her a further £8 to cover the phone call. Hope it covers it as you pay per extra minute after the first hour. I think she was getting so angry at the time taken and trying to keep her cool that common sense didn't kick in! Like  'When is a quiet time to call?'
