Hi all,

I recently moved out of my old flat and into a new one, both on the 14th of October. On that day, I sent an email to Octopus Energy, the supplier in the old flat, my outgoing meter readings as well as the new meter readings in the new flat, as I wanted them to supply my new flat.

On the 18th of October, I received a bill from E-On, billing me about £10.90 for energy use between 14th -15th of October. This didn't seem right to me, so I emailed on the 22nd of October (maybe should have tried harder to contact them sooner).

Anyway, I got an email from one of their reps on the 16th of Nov, asking me to confirm a few things, which I do. I then get another rep sending me a revised bill on the 21st of November.

I have received about 3 more bills since the first one, and dependnign on which bill I read, the DR amount seems to have gone up to £24 or £31!! On the bill there seems to have been some reversed account charges, but the DR amount is higher than on the 1st bill!

Should I pay off this now to clear it and hope to reclaim it some other way? Or have I completed mucked up?

Please help!

I think you missed an essential stage in the moving in process.  You MUST contact the existing supplier ie Eon and give them the meter reading . You become their customer but are then free to move to Octopus.  If you don't a) you could be liable for the previous occupiers debt and b) confusion follows.

Where does interest come into this ?
Never pay on an estimated bill

Ah, I think that's my mistake. My Octopus energy account previously displayed my old address, but it now has my current/new address on it - and I assumed that was that.

    >"Where does interest come into this ?"

The value alongside 'Your new balance' has gone up and up for each bill. I assumed they were heaping interest on to my bill, since I haven't paid it straight away. It could quite possibly be standing charges? In the interim, I've managed to get through to someone on eon next now on the phone, so hopefully get it sorted.

You have not understood the process of moving. The energy contract that you have is for the property not the individual. Each property has a deemed supplier (it keeps the lights on) and when you move in you contact the new deemed supplier with your details and meter readings. You can then switch back to Octopus. Have you actually checked to see which supplier is listed on the National Database for your property?

I remember emailing Scottish Power Energy  Networks (or something similar) asking for confirmation but I totally forgot to chase it up.

I'm just off the phone with a EON Next rep who apparently advises me that I should just disregard the bill since they've never supplied teh property. I'm very confused, but will try Octo / Bulb next..

That would have been your final invoice for the old property and sent, quite correctly, to your new address

    Hi,
0k,so you gave Octopus your exit readings, (final bill yet?)
Seems you didn't contact Eon with entry readings, so they may estimate that, depending on what reading previous tenant gave, if any, so you might be pay part of that bill.

    Y'all take care now.

Yes, just checked my Octopus account and my final bill says up to 13th of Oct, with the readings I gave on exiting.

An E-On rep has just emailed me my gas charges which comes to about £20 for 14-18th of October (16 points movement on the meter though probably an estimate). But no electric charges on the email.

In this era of price caps, I probably shouldn't worry about paying more to one company or another since the billing will need to end and start from some value and everything (unit rates/standing charges) are priced at the same anyway (if that makes sense)?  I guess my main concern is being double billed.. though I don't think i've had a payment taken by Octopus yet).
  • There is no interest.  The prices are basically identical.

You don't pay twice, because your final reading to E.ON in the new place will be your first reading to Octopus in the new place.

you are right to question them as they are dreadful at basic accounting.  They actually added the £67 credit on to my bill.  Twice.  And I don't mean they gave me a credit.  They said the amount increased what I owed them.

if you think your bill is an estemate then remember you said you gave octopus your reading at the new place because you wanted them to supply you. you could give this to eon (if you emailed it then you should just be able to screenshot the email inc the date to prove when it was from) then give them today's readings and your bill should be exactly up to date to let you move.

im assuming you emailed octopus as i dont know how otherwise you could give them an opening reading for an account they didn't supply. if you did it some other way then if you ask octopus they might be able to dig it out and confirm the number.
