Cash machine didn't pay out what I asked for

Options
I went to the cash machine at my local Tesco this morning and what I requested it pay out, it didn't, was £20 light. There was no statements available in either ATM, so I don't have any details of the transaction. I called my bank and they said that I'd have to wait until the system updates itself and the money should be paid back into my account. If it isn't then my bank will do an "ATM Dispute". The notes it paid out were brand new and very shiny. Never had it happen before, ever so I'm hoping that the machine will update correctly and I shall have my money back tomorrow. Anyone else had this happen to them? Did it get resolved reasonably quickly. Had to be the week before Christmas too... :-(

  • Are you absolutely certain it didn't give you all the notes? Those nice shiny new monopoly £20s have a habit of sticking together & I've thought I was shortchanged by the machines more than once.

I've heard of them putting £20 notes in a £10 slot by accident before, so those getting out £10 got £20!

A huge queue formed, and the bank very quickly realised the mistake!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • I had this happen to me, it took about a week to be resolved (although it wasn't Christmas week). They also refunded the £1.50 i got charged for using the machine, as a goodwill gesture. My bank was First Direct at the time.
  • Similar thing happened to me and it took quite a while to sort out.

If the machine doesn't update itself, you'll probably have to fill in a disputed transaction form. Your bank will then contact the owners of the machine and ask them to investigate.

In my case it was investigated and I got my tenner back, plus by mistake they gave me another!.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm waiting patiently to see if my £20 arrives back in my account. The system updates at midnight so I shall see then. Fingers crossed, otherwise, it's a call to the bank tomorrow to give them all the info. It definitely was £20 light, I thumbed through the notes very thoroughly and the amount that was paid out was definitely incorrect. Thanks again for all your replies. :-)

have you checked your account yet? you say its £20 less than it should have been, could it have been possibly the wrong button pressed when you were getting the money out?

  • My friend tried to withdraw £100 it said error then tried again it said error, then tried a third time it said error.
Well the first two times the error message came up no money came out and so friend when seeing the error message a third time walked off.

Then the man behind noticed a hindred quid sat their and shouted my friend back for the cash, luck the chap was honest.

Nothing has gone astray from the account so thanks to the strangers honesty.

Stupid machine hope you got your £20 back.

I used to work on ATMs they are pretty clever if two notes are stuck together it will notice and divert those to a `waste` bin. Likewise if it misses a beat and a note is missing it will keep trying to find you one until it times out and gives up. All this activity is recorded and printed on a journal roll, you should automatically get refunded.
still a good plan to alert your bank though, they dont hurry do they!!

  • Had it happen to me before, a message came up that the machine could not dispense all my money at that time, yet still took the balance out of my account. Was a bit of a pain in the @rse cos I had just took it out to buy a train ticket and had to hurry, but the bank refunded the difference.

About 8 or 9 years ago I gave my boyfriend my bank card to get the last £60 we had in the bank until payday a week away and he said the money bit opened but no money came out and £60 had vanished out of my account. I rang Abbey National (whi I banked with at the time) and they said my boyfriend had clearly stolen it and I would not see my money again, I knew for a fact my boyfriend wouldnt do that so i pestered them and they stuck with my boyfriend had stolen it so I asked them to get the cctv footage (it was a Natwest bank in kings Cross) and they refused. 3 months later I got a letter that said that they have had correspondence from Natwest and that it's computer has alerted them to a fault and they have my £60, bloomin nightmare. Oh and Abbey National still made me wait a few more weeks before they credited back to my account.
