SEISS & Tax return with HRMC

I received 5 SEISS grants

Grant for 26 March 2020 to 13 July 2020
Grant for 14 July 2020 to 19 October 2020
Grant for 1 November 2020 to 29 January 2021

Grant for 1 February 2021 to 30 April 2021
Grant for 1 May 2021 to 30 September 2021

I assume the last 2 grants should be part of the Self Employed tax return I've just submitted to HMRC for this year, and the previous 3 were for last year's return.

However, the HMRC website has automatically put the total of all 5 SEISS grants into this year's tax return
This creating much more tax for me to pay this year.

This seems odd, and I'm not sure why the HMRC website would do this.

Can anyone help explain this.

Thanks

  • Did you actually include the first three on the 2020:21 return?

    I'll have to check
Do you know where I can download the previous year's return?
I'm on the HMRC site but can't find how to do this.
I've been on the site 30min, just can't work it out.

    thx

I am sure that you would have heard by now if you had failed to declare last year's grant payments. I seem to recall that there was initially a problem with HMRC pre-populating 2021/22 returns with all five grants. Just overwrite the amount entered with the amount you received for SEISS 4 and 5 combined.

Even if you had not declared the SEISS 1,2 and 3 grants on last year's tax returns, it would not be correct to put all of them on the 2021/22 tax return. You should amend the 2020/21 return instead (interest and penalties might apply).

I am not sure where the option is to view your return, as I do not use the HMRC software.

It seems this is what happened.

They put all 5 of my grants, over 2 years, into my '22 return, even though I manually put only last year's grant in.
This means, I assume, that I'm paying tax on my '21 SEISS grants once again.
I'll have to go in and adjust it.

    Thanks
