I have a fairly old Pc for which I use for basic internet and spread sheet use for records.

Am I correct in understanding that there will be no more updates for Windows 10? and that sooner or later I will have to have a Pc with Windows 11?

You wont have to have, but there will be increasing security risks if you dont.

By all accounts there are still a reasonable number of ATM machines running XP and Windows 7

Definitely don't need it for the foreseeable future. Everything will continue to work as it does now. In some dim and distant future you might want faster/better software - but for a bit of browsing and a spreadsheet I wouldn't worry in the slightest.

Correct- but not until 14 October 2025. Microsoft have it in print that support for both home & pro will continue until then.

As above, Windows 10 will be getting updates until late 2025 so you will still get both feature and security updates for some time yet.

If your PC is as you say fairly old then it may not have the security hardware required for running Windows 11 anyway.

I quite like Windows 11 but in your case I wouldn't do anything until 2026 at the earliest.

Many thanks for all the replies, answered fully my queries.
I was thinking of buying a new Pc in the current sales or the Xmas sales, will be able to have a think if that's needed now.

I have a Windows 11 machine and there is't much difference between 10 & 11. I regularly use Win7, 8.1. 10 & 11 machines and they are all very similar once you get used to the different interfaces. It.s a bit like a new car with a different dash board and better safety features.

It is like anything, the version you are used to is much better, because you know how to do things.
Any "improvement" seems to make it far more difficult to do things until you learn how.

I used to hate win 10, 7 seemed much better, but now I prefer 10, no doubt in 2030 I will think 11 is great.

I'm more concerned that directx 9 support was removed from the 12th gen processors tbh.

Mt toshiba R390 runs a series 3 cpu of the i5 variant. I use linux because i had enough of windows and paying for TPM laptop, that had a non depreciated graphics chip, forking out hundreds, and otherwise not gaining any benefit was a deal breaker.

A happy mint use for over a year, with no problems either. Although my new hand me downs from work are i7 series 6 cpu, also with windows key on a sticker, they too will be converted to Mint. Wine does support directx 9, and before writing off your laptop give it a try as it costs you nothing
