MSE News: Energy price cap to rise in January – your energy rates could change slightly

Thank you to everyone (esp. SparkyGrad) who has helped me to understand the January changes. The bottom line (for me) is that my fuel bill is going up by 3.75%, based on exactly the same usage as before. This is not trivial and completely unexpected. Whether or not it is the result of complex Ofcom formulas relating to E7, or the rotation of the solar system, or just bad luck being in the 'wrong' region with the 'wrong' supplier, I am unimpressed. But I guess it is as nothing compared to what's on the horizon for April. God help those folks who are already struggling through this cold spell.
Merry Christmas everyone!0 -
In Wiltshire Shell is increasing E7 to 43.013p / 21.426 in January. Has anyone been advised what the single rate is rising to? Thanks.0

PAYG, 53.3p day, 3.6p night
Direct Debit, 49.38 day, 11.2p night
Other suppliers will offer different splits so you need to work out what will be the cheapest based on your day/night usage.0 -

If anyone knows of a supplier with a minimum E7 usage below 30% I would be grateful for the information. Otherwise I'll be moving to single rate, and shifting my load times towards the traditional peaks, which is exactly what the grid doesn't need.0 -

Yesterday I received this PDF email attachment from Octopus:-=================================================================================When I emailed them to ask if I could save money by switching to a non E7 tariff, I received this:-That doesn't help much because the Flexible Octopus prices quoted do not include the Jan 2023 increase. It's doubly confusing because the figures do not include the gov support discount.I can't work out whether I would be better off keeping my existing ex Avro E7 tariff or switching to the Flexible Octopus non-E7 tariff. As you can see from the Annual Consumption figures above, I use very little nighttime electricity. As a pensioner, I tend to get up late and go to bed early in winter in an attempt to save money and keep warm.Today I received a reply from Octopus:-"The Flexible Octopus rates from the 1st January with Government support are 32.07p/kWh and standing charge 48.90p/day."44.17p - 32.07p = 12.1p. If you don't use much nighttime electricity, that works out 27% cheaper; a massive difference! If I had been aware of this earlier, I would have changed my tariff as soon as Octopus took over from Avro over a year ago.On each my bills it states:-For your electricity
Good to know.
You’re already on our cheapest tariff for
your electricity usage. We’ll let you know if this changes. This is clearly not the case!I should have been notified of the cheaper tariff.Should I consider raising a complaint with OFGEM?0 -

Does anyone know the EonNext single rate tariffs from 1st January? thanks0 -

And no, they should not have notified you of that difference. The rules say that they should tell you about a cheaper equivalent tariff. Switching from multi-rate to single-rate is not an equivalent tariff.
You have no grounds for complaint.0
