Hi guys

I have a woodburner. This year Ive built-up quite a good supply of kindling/logs, but Im woefully short on newspaper!! Does anyone know a good source of newspaper? Other than going to a recycling center I cant think of one. Maybe these days where people consume their news digitally, newspaper are in short supply? Perhaps supermarkets throw newspaper away?

If anyone has any suggestion Id be very grateful - things are getting quite desperate! :|

I struggle to get hold of newspapers to line the kitty litter tray. Local shops & supermarkets return unsold papers to the distributors for a refund, so that option is out. Don't use the bus anywhere near as much as I used to - Could often pick up a free paper as I boarded.. The cleaner at work will find the odd one or two and stick it my bag..
Firelighters are my go to for getting the stove lit.

  • If you know anyone who uses trains or trams regularly you might ask them to pick up discarded ones for you - the free papers are still given out in some places and often get left behind - however, operators are far better about clearing carriages these days.

My understanding is that newsagents/shops only need to return the covering page of a newspaper to get a refund/credit for not selling it so all the inner bits will just being going into their recycling.  If you ask at the local shop/texco maybe they will be happy to hang on for some for you to collect.

Our Lidl and Aldi usually have a pile of local ad mag type papers near the exit, next to their own mags.

Ask on Freecycle. You only need a few people nearby who regularly buy Sunday papers!

    Firelighters?
Or, if you're at least slightly handy, vaseline (petroleum jelly) cotton balls. A jar of vaseline and a bag of cotton balls from a poundshop should get you most of a winter's firelighters for £2:

  • Last winter i only used wood shavings from whittling pine kindling or 2x2 etc & would usually prep more than enough for the next few fires while just waiting for the current fire to get going., 2-3 mins usually.
This year i've a lot of plain brown corrugated cardboard which when ripped across the grain into 2" x 12" ragged strips & loosely rolled works a treat.

I get enough junk mail (not post) through my door - added to the reams of brown paper out of Amazon boxes -  to fill my recycling box to the brim once a month - does it have to be newspaper?
Newsagents have to return papers for the refunds - it's the bar code on the back they want but you won't find many places happy to pull papers apart for you - it's a bit time-consuming. And @Rdwill is right - it has a value so no ones going to be giving it away easily.
