New build and trying to switch, Utilita not letting me and an unregistered gas supply

Dear all

Moved in 3rd November 22. I am at wits end with this.  After stressful move.  I was told on arrival my electric was being supplied by Utilita energy.  I was told my gas supply was British Gas.  I decided to stay with bulb energy as they were ok from my last property 7th Nov for a dual fuel Tariff.  I was very anxious due to energy market that no one would accept me.  I contacted bulb and they then informed me Utilita were objecting to my switch.  I was told to contact Utilita and after a total of 4 hours of being passed around and being put on hold they said they have cancelled the objection and placed this on my file.  I was then contacted by bulb on 17th this had gone through and they would be taking over in 5 days.  Previous to this British Gas told me they were not supplying my house, so who is?  I was told the gas meter had not been registered on national database, I don't know what I am paying and who as I speak right now.  Yesterday 22nd Nov I have been told by bulb, Utilita are still objecting to my switch.  When I spoke to utilita previous I said I would pay for energy used, I have registered with them and have there app on my phone, they gave me the price of what I had used thus far but I could even pay on their app.  I am at wits end as bulb are sending mixed messages and the customer service of Utilita is so bad.  Can anyone help me please.  I am thinking of scrapping the whole idea of using bulb and going with Octopus Energy.  Why are Utilita objecting, what are my rights.  I just don't have the time to sit for hours on hold.  As I said I am at wits end.

You can find out who is supplying your gas by using     Find My Supplier

To be fair ,you haven't given it much time to switch suppliers -sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to set up an account so it's not surprising that Utilita are objecting as they probably only now have you as a new customer.

Bulb customers are being moved to Octopus energy anyway, so not much point cancelling the switch and trying to start another, as it will just further complicate the situation with Utilita.
  • When a new property is built, the developer engages with the local DNO and a gas transporter to install meters and pipes/wires as required. In my case, 4 years ago, my developer choose Scottish Power Energy Networks and Fulcrum Pipelines. The updating of the 2 National Databases was undertaken by Scottish Power Retail's new connections team. Once the property is properly registered on the 2 databases, then Scottish Power Retail set up my energy accounts and I was free to switch suppliers. This process took a few weeks. Gas gets a tad complicated when an IGT is involved as it has to be paid to transport your gas.
  • Welcome to the forum.

Firstly, don't stress.  I know it seems complicated and that everything is going wrong, but just slow down.

Utilita will be charging you the same as you would be paying Bulb, so you are not losing any money while they are confused.

Give it some time for the accounts to settle and then address any remaining issues each in turn.

One thing that isn't clear to me - did you contact Utilita on moving in and give them your details and opening reading, and only then get in touch with Bulb to request the switch? If not then that will be why they objected I suspect - they can't switch an account when they haven't got a name for the account holder at that stage. It takes a few weeks after moving in before you can get a switch to go through smoothly as a result. As Sparky says though - at the moment it's unlikely that you'll be paying much more so don't worry on that account.

Once you've established who supplies the gas, then you need to repeat the process with them - get in touch, tell them you've moved in, and give them your details and the opening reading. Once the account is set up you'll be able to organise a switch if you want to move the gas too.

If you go with bulb, you'll get transferred to Octopus in due course anyway - so going direct could well cut out the middleman, as it were.

Oh - and if you can't find details of the supplier for the gas via the link above you might need to contact the housebuilder to find out more details. Chances are that the information you've been given about it being BG are going to be correct, but they will be able to confirm that.

Finally - welcome to your new home!

  • I am looking for support.  I moved into new home 2nd Nov.  I have gas however nobody can tell me who is supplying the gas and more importantly how much I am paying.  I have been told the gas meter was not registered on national database.  Apparently British Gas has the supply but not registered the meter which means I can't switch.  I just get fobbed off and when I called British Gas after waiting hours on hold I was told my house isn't registered to them.  How do I sort this out?

On the Ofgem site there are ways to find your supplier
  • Sorry still learning to navigate round forum.  Thanks for your responses.  I am in touch with ES pipelines.  They have told me British Gas are the supplier however they have not registered the meters on the database.  I am concerned as no-one has given me a unit price.  I am limiting the use of gas to 45 mins in morning and 45 mins in the evening.  its a combo boiler.  Utilita has got sorted out and I finally paid my first bill.  So electricity is sorted.  Do I just stay patient?
  • Thank you for speedy response.  It says

    Gas Supplier:Utilita Energy Limited
    Gas Transporter:Cadent Gas Limited

I know Utilita are supplying my electricity however they have told me they are not supplying my gas.
