Smokeless coal prices

I currently have no central heating due to having had work done through the summer that's still unfinished.
I have a multi fuel stove in the living room that is now my only heat source.
I've been using smokeless coal since earlier in the year, picking up a bag here and there since the end of last winter to keep a stock, I'm running low atm and have been going from shop to shop, I can't quite believe how much it's risen in price. In April i paid £3.50 for a 10kg bag from the range, it's now £7.50.
Considering it's produced in the UK, I'm quite shocked by the massive increase, but that's the way of most things right now i guess.

Home bargains have increased their smokeless coal by around £1 over the last week or so to £6.50, I've picked up a couple of bags from there to tie me over.

has anyone seen any good deals anywhere lately?

  • Buy it from your local coal merchant.
    It will be considerably cheaper.

B&M worked out cheaper than my coal merchant for Blaze last year. I went to check the prices at B&M this morning and it was £7.99 a bag compared to £3.99 this time last year. Luckily I have about a third of a bunker left. One thing is for sure, I won't be buying coal that those prices.
  • I recently shopped around Stovesse Anthracite, best price £550 per ton, highest price £690.  Last March  I was paying £350.

Port spot prices e.g. Richards Bay, for coal were well up in the summer but have fallen right back in October to December.  I feel merchants were pricing according to their summer supply prices and given the chaos in the gas and electricity markets have somewhat exploited the situation to stick with the price increases of the summer.

Interesting.  I see that UK anthracite imports were much higher than usual this summer, as we replaced Russian anthracite with imports from Europe, but have now dropped to below normal.  Presumably coal suppliers were worried about the winter supply and stocked up at a time that prices in the market were higher.  I suspect that most of the prices for delivery now, do accurately reflect the price paid for the coal.
  • I got a ton of Oxbow smokeless delivered in July for £500 ..The coal merchant thought that was expensive,.I checked the other day and it's now £650. The coal merchant said there was no sign of it going down either.
    Of course I’m no expert.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll have a look online tonight for a local coal merchant. I can't say I've seen 1 in these parts since i was a teenager.
Considering i live less than a mile from what was once the largest open cast mine in Europe- how times have changed!
  • My local coal/wood merchant has 25kg bags of smokeless @£13.50 (3 for £40) and £12.50 (5 for £60) 2 different brands. I enquired about " tonne bags" of seasoned wood which I got in October @ £75....now £105!

I live a few miles from Bacton gas terminal and the gas main goes underneath our road but we don't have mains gas in our area.
