High electricity one bedroom flat

Yeh, we did raise a formal complaint. And we are in a queue for the ombudsman. Yet the bills keep coming. It’s my partner who it’s really getting to. He finds it overwhelmingly stressful and has been saying to me for weeks that this will not end. The more time passes the more I feel he might be right. Can we just go and not pay those bills? Will the consequences of this follow us to where we live after? The longer we live in the flat the more time the old provider will have to bill us, and we are just thinking - don’t give them that time.0

Switching suppliers before sorting out the wrong meter issue has complicated everything. Had you done this with your old supplier the wrong billing would have been resolved at the same time as getting the correct meter allocated to your flat. You don’t need a solicitor just write back to them pointing out that the meter does not serve your flat and provide copies of the correspondence you have had with your new supplier regarding the meter issue. Also ask them when they will refund you for the previous over charging d use to using the wrong meter.1

If you don't dispute the bills they will go to debt collectors, and they are in your name not for a flat, so they will follow you.0

If you're not getting anywhere with the old supplier, why don't you try asking your new supplier to get in touch with them and explain the situation? They might say it's nothing to do with them but surely it's worth a try.0

The bills so far have been saying “the occupier” rather than our actual names.
We tried and tried to make our old provider realise that the meters were crossed but we were just met with a brick wall each time. Once we changed our new provider could see what was happening straight away and sent an Engineer out to prove what we were saying was correct. The customer service with the old provider was atrocious and they just literally talked over us.
I’ve just been told it will be another week before we are directly connected to our own meter - the one we have been sending manual readings from. I’m hoping that will mean no more surprise bills but I’m not going to hold my breath.0 -
As an aside to the main topic OP - you mentioned not having home insurance? Hopefully by this you mean buildings insurance (indeed in a flat it would be unusual to have this) and you do have contents cover in place? If not, you really should sort that as a priority - it's not something to cut corners by skipping. Apologies for going off topic - but I didn't feel I could leave that unsaid as in the longer term it could prove far more costly than anything you might save.
I wish you luck resolving the meter issue.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Moving home won't fix it if it's in your name or your name gets passed on by the landlord

It will fix it with regards to - they can’t charge us anymore from that day onwards. As we won’t be living there. Maybe they might be able to force us to pay the already outstanding bills. But they can’t charge us anymore from then on0

But from what you said earlier, your new supplier is not charging you for the wrong meter? So your old supplier can't charge you "anymore" regardless of whether you stay in the flat or move.Blotto17 said:It will fix it with regards to - they can’t charge us anymore from that day onwards. If it is the old incorrect billing that you need to sort out, then moving out or staying in won't make a difference, it will still have to be sorted.Gas: warm air central heating, instant water heater, Octopus tracker

Has the old supplier send you a final bill?
I think it might be more complicated now with the two meters that are allocated to the wrong flat with two different suppliers now.
If you are unlucky the new supplier is billing you for the correct meter, and the old supplier still for your old meter. Should not be possible, but that is the situation you describe.
