Front door lock / replacement

  • I changed ours on a high security locking system on a composite door.
    i watched a few videos
I noted there were two types of spindles and one was often used on front door the other on the rear - the spindles are split so allow front door to be closed and not opened from the outside by just depressing the lever.

I noted what lock cassettes locked like (we have a chub key type front door lock)

Having watched the videos I easily opened the stip that holds the long mechanism
I layed on a sheet and carefully measured the cassette holes.

(the latch was getting stuck in the lock at times and even cleaning/oiling did not do the trick)

so i ordered a cassette and carefully took the handles out, took the long strip off, took the lock off - reidid all and fitted it, worked like a dreeam

Locksmith quoted about 300 quid over the phone.  A doulbe glazing repair man quoted 140 about plus cassette for about 80 quid

I bought th cassette for 50 quid, came with two keys and I paid i think aabout  ten quid for another three keys.

  • When changing euro cylinders, it helps improve security by measuring and fitting the correct size ones. Plenty of advice online how to measure. I've changed plenty where the outside key hole extends by quite a few mm. This allows use of a common burglary tool, a short length of scaffold pipe with a keyhole shape cut in the side. Slide over protruding lock barrel, quick twist and you're in.

Keeping the barrel flush with the handle minimises the opportunity for break ins this way.
Signature on holiday for two weeks
  • Re euro cyliner locks - not just make sure it is the correct lenght so harder for crooks to break in, get the 'ani-snap' locks when they are snapped they don't unlock the door - we have yale one fitted to a rear door
  • If you go to a company that replaces doors and windows, you may find they have kept one or two multipoint locking mechanisms. As you said, they are no longer available, but a good locksmith or door company can find you a suitable replacement.
We have a local locksmith company that specialises in replacing door mechanisms. You may have a local company too.

Not quite there is another step to do before the door wil open, and a don’t mean turning the handle
