Starling connected card for pay at pump

Well that's not correct, our Asda fuel station has a drive through kiosk, as do most of them round here (north Wales). But it does also have some pay at pumps, which are available even when the kiosk is closed (day or night).sheramber said:
Asda petrol stations are all pay at the pump with no kiosks at all.0 -
Whenever I've been at the fuel pumps they tell you not to use the phone even for a points card scan - some of them also demand chip and PIN for the card pay at pump so your mileage may vary.Band7 said:
Do you normally have your phone with you? If so, you can pay with Apple/GooglePay. You might have to go to the cashier to pay as not all petrol stations take contactless.Spooky241 said:..... my problem is 9 times out of 10 I don't have my purse with my cards with me when I need the fuel and I don't live near the petrol station. I was thinking if the connected card could be used at the pump I could leave the card in the car and always have it when needed.
I've used one in Scotland, you paid at a box on the wall for a pre-set amount which then cuts off the pump when you reach the amountpenners324 said:
I've never seen a petrol station closed but still let you use the pumps. Surely they'd have an outside hatch / window to let payments take place.Spooky241 said:
Yea I do but they are normally closed when I go so has to be contactless. Guess I will just get a connected card and try it for myself and see if it works.Band7 said:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I thought there was a blanket ban on using mobile phones on petrol station forecourts?
Same reason you can't use them on aeroplanes or in hospitals - any use will result in explosion and giant ball of flame.

it's the 10kV battery inside them that's the problem.0

It's one of these silly "just in case" things of an impossible scenario that they think worst case, could happen. Mythbusters did an episode where they basically recreated the workings of an engine with petrol vapour and the optimum air/fuel mix used for ignition and still couldn't get it to ignite by using the phone. Ironically, you are actually far more likely to be the source of a problem with an electrostatic discharge getting out of the car potentially causing it. They managed to get it done with women's underwear rubbed on a fur car seat (based on stats in the US that women are 6x as likely to get back into their cars while refuelling) but again, it required a fuel mix again akin to an engine that would never happen just during fuelling. They did it again on a revisit episode a year later and again confirmed using the phone cannot cause a petrol station fire.flaneurs_lobster said:I thought there was a blanket ban on using mobile phones on petrol station forecourts?

Well the women's underwear and furry seat covers will have to go.
At least I can stop putting my phone in a bucket of sand when I visit BP.4 -

Chase card worked OK for us this weekend at Asda (£99 limit required on the card).
