Octopus "energy use" units

I see that Octopus have reverted the units shown under MY ACCOUNT / USEAGE to "Cu Metres" for gas - which is meaningless to most people.......

It used to display kWh - Which meant something - rather than having to multiply the Cu M by conversion factor (10.77) to convert to kWh

Anybody know why ?

If I had to guess, it would be because people were complaining that their meter readings were getting multiplied by 10.77 "as some sort of scam to make money".

It is easier to match up with other things when you want to look after every unit.

kWh is meaningless when your gas meter doesn't work in kWh, unlike your electric meter.

I mean - have you any idea how much heat you get from 1 cu m of gas ?

Do you have an older SMETS1 meter that was recently adopted perhaps?

It was an oddity of SMETS1 that they returned a kWh figure which was shown in the 'My Account' section, whereas SMETS2 have always returned and shown only the m3 figure.

The problem in displaying a daily kWh figure for gas is that it will not match your billing due to the way the calorific value has to be calculated to match the billing period, rather than on a daily basis...

It varies with the calorific value of the gas supplied - one cubic metre of gas equates roughly to 11.22kWh of gas. 

FWiW, I have just installed the latest version of the Octopus App and both it and the webpage My Account show my gas usage in kWh. (Both are incorrect as a fixed CV is being used). The only correct cubic metre to kWh conversion is the one shown on an actual statement.

The app has a slider to go between cubic metres and an approximated kWh figure. The webpage has always shown cubic metres for me.

Slider (Sarah's mode) is no longer showing for me in the app, so is kWh only.
Like you, website has always been m³ for me.

They've been doing all sorts of weird messing around with the app lately, a week or so ago they released an update that removed the arrows that let you scroll back through the days/weeks/months on the usage charts. I rolled back to an old version of the app from an apk archive to get them back, and then a few days later another update reinstated them.

My current app has kWh for gas (with no m³ option), they're probably doing some A/B testing.

If you were technically minded, App version 3.41.1 from the beginning of the month had the kWh slider as well as the date arrows and can be found online (I found it on APKcombo), but I'm sure they'll reinstate it themselves in an upcoming version before too long
