Turkish airlines and safety

In case anyone is tempted to save money (or time) by using this airline, please don't. On Saturday I used them for a domestic flight and was shocked by several violations of basic safety protocols.

First, and most disturbing, was the video that they use for the safety instructions. Most of this was the usual stuff, but when they told us about life-jackets they showed pictures of a family inflating their life-jackets while still inside the 'plane! It is of course difficult or impossible to leave an aeroplane with an inflated life-jacket and that is why proper airlines always tell you to inflate them only once you have left the 'plane. Considering how many people would have seen and approved this video, and watched it on other flights, without noticing that something is seriously wrong -- well,it makes me wonder what mechanical and other problems they would fail to notice.

Secondly, a hostess handed me a cup of hot coffee over another passenger while looking in the opposite direction. If their training were any good this would not have happened.

Thirdly, cabin crew did noot understand a fairly simple request (what is the Turkish name of such-and-such Metro station). Since most airline safety protocols are set in English, this suggests that their response to an emergency might be confused and ineffective.

While I have flown on many local and "exotic" airlines in Africa and South America, this ranks among my most disturbing airline experiences.

They will of course be operating to the standards set by the Turkish Aviation Authorities which may not require them to state when to inflate life jackets. Although its quite perplexing why you'd actually show people inflating them inside the cabin for the reasons you've mentioned.

I always hear good reviews about flying with Turkish although it's fair to say their safety record is less than great.

In an actual evacuation the biggest risk to life is passenger behaviour. As seen again in the unfortunate events in Lima last week with pax filming the entire emergency, evacuating with their hand luggage, and even stopping for smiling selfies with the burnt wreckage in the background.
