Is it still possible to pay for Special Delivery using stamps?

This...  So the best option may be to try and use stamps to just under the required value and pay the last 10p or so in cash; then the PO clerk can print the SD label for the small amount and trigger the correct receipt.

I've done it once and it worked.  But as you said earlier - it requires the clerk to know how to deal with stamps as pre-payment and that may depend on who you get.  I've also read here of clerks who flat out refused to accept pre-stamped SD packages.
