Vodafone won’t disconnect account

Options
Hello

i am selling my house and when I rang up to inform them was told it takes a minimum of 30 days to disconnect my broadband and phone account. My problem is this means the new owner could plug in a phone and rack up a huge phone bill which they would charge me for. Is it right they can refuse to disconnect me for so long? I offered to pay up to the date the y proposed even if they disconnect earlier, but was still told it’s not possible.

Thanks

Mark

I had the same situation when I sold my last house 10 years ago, they need 30 day notice, as long as you can prove to them the date you move out I don't think you will have a problem as I didn't
  • They are not refusing to disconnect you, you are having to comply with the terms of the contract you agreed.

Most ISPs can put a a bar on the use of the landline during the notice period.

Also, by not having taken timely action you may well be seriously inconveniencing your buyer.

TBF to the OP, given the way house moves tend to drag on for months with solicitors/conveyancer’s refusing to commit to or hint at dates, then suddenly being ready it can be difficult to take timely action. This is particularly the case if any work from home is involved and the modern internet banking, insurance management etc etc that moving house entails.

When we moved earlier in the year Vodafone were able to disconnect everything from the old property within a couple of days, but took a 14 day cooling off period before connecting the new property.

Yes exactly, There are only two weeks between exchange and completion, which is pretty standard. So obviously one can’t give 30 days notice if the internet is needed until completion day, which it is in this case.

Am happy to pay for the service until end of contract, I am not being unreasonable to ask them to disconnect it early in my opinion. Most people only have two weeks between exchange and completion so it’s odd they can’t cope with this. Every other utility is able to do so.

But other utilities don't physically disconnect eg water, electricity - the changeover meter read is /should be taken but the services remain live. Disconnection of the phone line requires input from Openreach and (as I know from previous experience ) they work to their own timescales.
