Getting nowhere with Wizzair - HELP

Last July two of my children were flying from Luton to Ljubljana for a 7 day break with Wizzair. They had hotels, a plan of what they were going to do and also a hire car booked for part of it.

Whilst they were queuing to check in they were told that the flight was cancelled. They were handed a piece of paper with a number to call along with other passengers. In a nutshell they were on their own with no help from airport staff.

The choice was simple. Rearrange with Wizzair for 2 days later, so losing 2 days of holiday that would !!!!!! everything, or find an alternative way of getting to Ljubljana. By luck they were standing near a couple who lived near Ljubljana and a plan was put together. Fly to Venice from Stansted, then bus it to Ljubljana from Venice (direct bus). The cost of the flights to Venice were ~£650, Bus tickets £56. A mileage claim was also put in for me to travel from home to Luton to pick them up, back home, then later in the day to Stansted and back home. A shade over £40 (using 45p per mile).

Their first offer was E250 per passenger. Their second offer was E150 (not sure if each or not) and Bus Ticket refund of £56

Am I right that I should be getting Cost of flights to venice (£650) + Bus ticket to Ljubljana (£56) + mileage claim (£40) refunded to me? Any other compensation due? They arrived at destination 9 hours late.

From the aboce claim do I deduct the original cost of the outward flights? (£140)

Wizzair were obliged to get the passengers to their destination at the earliest opportunity, so same day via a different route would comply, and the full cost of the replacement flights plus bus should therefore be refundable, although your mileage is unlikely to be reimbursable.

Provided the cancellation wasn't due to extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control, compensation would also be due, but as this would be €250pp, this may be what they've already offered?
  • When a flight is cancelled a passenger can’t receive both a refund and a re-routing but the passenger is entitled to choose which they receive .

Providing that your children didn’t already requested and received a refund of the original flights ( £140 ) then they are entitled to claim for reimbursement of the expenses of the replacement flight and bus ( re-routing ) from the airline ( in this case Wizzair ) . There is no need to deduct the cost of the original flight from that amount.

The mileage claim for you to get to the airport to pick them up is not reclaimable . If they had had receipts from that part of the trip via public transport from Luton to Stansted they could have reclaimed that expense .
  • So, they should be able to claim the cost of rerouting, cost of the flights to Venice ~£650, Bus tickets £56.

Are they entitled to E250pp as compensation as well? Or not?
