Is it possible to apply without the overdraft? HSBC are known to be difficult, that would increase the odds of success if the option is there.
I believe you have to qualify for a minimum of a £1000 overdraft, but how much you actually take is optional. There's certainly the option to pick the amount (up to the max offered) during the application.
I applied for the HSBC advance account and was knocked back, but offered the standard bank account and a credit card.

It did offer me an overdraft of upto £750 so perhaps this is why - although quite honestly why the overdraft eligibility matters is neither here nor there, I have never had the need to utilise it on my existing bank account, so it feels a bit of a moot point.

I wonder if there is an underwriting department that can be contacted? The branch staff are very much 'computer says no'.
  • I have just been rejected for the switcher advance account but offered the standard account without the switching bonus. Found this a little upsetting given just how many intrusive personal questions are asked during the application and having never been rejected for a bank account since the 80s when I had no history.
I wonder what will now be happening to all that data I provided!!
Having never been in debt and fitting all the criteria  given in the application it makes you wonder what the algorithm is expecting ,

HSBC is notoriously picky. They like customers to have a good income (maybe it doesn't state the amount anymore: it used to) and folk have been routinely rejected in the past. I would not fret about it.

I would just try another bank.

I applied yesterday. I was accepted for Advance account with overdraft higher limit. I stayed on 1000 did not make higher and accepted 1000. I don't need overdraft but I am not so sure if I say no overdraft I may lose bonus so I choose 1000 like in Terms and Conditions. I was also accepted for Advance Rewards Credit Card. I don't need this but it has a good bonus. After my application I received immediately SMS but no email still after 24 hours. Is it normal?
