Skipton Building Society - Opening/Operating Online Experiences

What is everyone’s experience of opening an online account with Skipton? Is it straightforward with online identity checks or do they need paperwork posted to them?

I was verified online, no ID documents needed.  Operating online works perfectly, with transfers to and from a nominated account.
  • Very easy to open but rejected my nominated accounts (they said I could upload a statement)
I have a branch based account, so used that for withdrawals (cheque) instead.
  • Slightly OT
I/we had postal accounts years ago = 100%
We've been with several building socities over the years and on and off with the Coventry./online - good as gold

From what we have experienced with Building society savings, 10/10 they are very caring/good.

My experience of the Skipton has been very positive - online interface and experience clear, easy and secure, and the app one of the best in the business for a traditional BS.

The online chat function has been super in my experience - friendly, clear, helpful and reassuring.

No problems nominating an account. You can nominate a second account for withdrawals and if they want to verify it, as happened to me, it wasn’t a difficult process.

"Your account is now set up but payments cannot be made into your account until we have verified your ID. This can be done by visiting a branch or completing the Skipton Online Identification Form and sending it back to us with two pieces of original ID"

I am an existing customer with a nominated Barclays current account which remains valid. I have had several savings accounts with Skipton including transferred ISAs over the years where they had various additional information about me from the transfer process and forms. I have had the grid card before and now the app all registered. They now ask for ID for this new account but I can continue using the existing one.... OK Skipton!

I have never been asked for additional identification for any account before, I've been at the same address for over 10 years and never had any issues even opening current accounts with new banks where I am not a customer. Obviously, will not be sending original ID over the post for a savings account, not worth the risk. No Skipton near me, I once went to the nearest branch and the service was poor.

In short, they're OK when things work but sometimes they don't for no apparent reason and then you see how poor customer service is.
  • I'm another vote for 'opening an account worked fine with no issues'.  However like others, their systems would simply not accept my First Direct current account as my nominated account.

My nominated account is my First Direct current account. No problems
  • It is strange how nominated bank accounts cause so much trouble when they are needing to be verified. I have a NWBS current account used as my nominated account (which I have had for 30+ years) and I have had no problems whatsoever until twice recently I have been asked to send a copy of a statement (one was Paragon and the other I have forgotten)

Despite all the positive comments, there is always a possibility that the automated ID check throws up an issue, and they will request some documentation. This can happen with any provider, maybe more with some than others, although there are no statistics to prove this though.
