UC debt management refund

Options
I changed over to UC and was told I had a tax credits overpayment. They took the first instalment today and I called them to ask to lower the payments. They agreed and said they would issue a refund for the payment taken today. I asked how long this will take to go through and she mumbled something about writing it on her list so she doesn't forget as they haven't received the payment yet, but it "should be" this week.

Has anyone had a refund from them and could tell me how long they usually take please?

  • I am totally surprised to hear that they will refund the deduction. The way they take the money is to deduct a high amount causing the debtor to contact them to agree a smaller figure in the future.
I have had this happen when I had a DWP debt of just over £300 from way back and the first I knew about it was when my State Pension was only 2/3rds of what it should have been. I then received a letter some days later telling me what the deduction was going to be (bit late as they had already deducted it) They agreed that it was 'a bit high' so reduced it to £10, instead of the £70 for the next 30 months. I did ask if they could refund the £60 and they said no.
