Nyk, quick, do a price of gold comparison for the Kenwood Mixer so we can see how much it would have cost in today's money!
1972 was the year I was born, and I bet that mixer works better than I do!My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
redglass isnt the chicken damoda just the best ...ive been very fortunate to go to a few amazing countries but of all my travels the gambia has the most delicious food what an amazing place as well ...getting nostalgic for holidays now *sigh*...janey really enjoyed reading your posts today funny as **** looks like "hopefuly" all our wobbles are done for a wee while mine has i am back on the straight and narrow ...hubby is still in pain but insisting on going to work next week and i'm moaning at him not to he's connected up tp a tens machine while we speak and has swallowed enough painkillers to warrant getting his stomach pumped...but he is worried about money so he insists he's going back so i tried to explain to him if we were more frugal with things he wouldnt have to rush back ...i think i saw a flicker cross his eyes so gonna let him have a wee think then add more fugal ideas to the pot lol ...hope everyone is doing great0

Hello everyone!
am i imagining it, or is the delicates cycle on the washing machine much shorter (and hence much more frugal) than a regular cycle?
perhaps one of you obsessive electricity meter watchers will be able to enlighten meThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

.I myself seem to be managing ok with the budget.i don't have an OH so I think this makes it easier.
I knew there had to be an up side to being on my own:D
Most of my financial mess was due to ex OH, who neglected to pay various bills and hadn't told me. Took months to sort out after he left, we were nearly cut off electricity, gas and phone, and I had to make massive monthly payments for over a year to sort it out, added to which the boiler broke down and was condemned and the back door had to be replaced so I also had to take out 2 loans to pay for them , but now I'm back to normal amounts:T and have even managed to budget for a new kitchen!
Luckily my children were very mature and understanding, they didn't have or ask for pocket money for ages, did paper rounds and worked in a restaurant, then used EMA once they got to college.DS now at uni and just about managing with his grant and student loan. Sometimes I worry about the huge debt he'll leave with, but it seems quite common these days and at least they only have to pay it back at affordable rates.

Hi
I am willing to try this challenge, even if I can't manage to keep within the limits, I am sure I can find ways to cut costs.
We are paying 6 months rent in advance on our new home, so it leaves the Council Tax, water (currently included in Scotland but we are moving back to England), utilities, food, fuel for the cars, insurances (contents, car, pension and life), car tax.
We also run a small business and developing our business further, so that will incur some expense. We are trying to live on our interest from our house sale, so the capital is safe. We have no debt. We do need a washing machine.
Initially there will be three adults sharing a house but none are currently working.
Hello CCStar, we'll be delighted to have you on board, welcome to the 4k challenge :T Just let me know what your target figure and your start date is and then I can get your name added to post one. Good luck with your move - what part of Scotland are you leaving?
MSHAWX - the electricity is my single biggest expense here. Live in rented accommodation, I houseshare and the account isn't in my name, so I can't switch. That's actually it REDUCED after having a fit at the underestimated bill. At that point, it was eating 88 units a day! Have managed to get it down to between 70 and 75 now, but with only electric heaters, it's getting ridiculous. Roll on summer so I can turn off the storage heaters! I think it's costing about £35 per week right now and this is one drafty old house!
REDGLASS - Sorry for the confusion, the 'we' have a new niece was representing all of us frugalers on behalf of Mollymop. MollyMop - meant to ask if baby has a name yet?I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

OK, here's the NYK analysis (with appropriate rounding up of approximations to avoid financial OCD attack)
1972 Buy Kenwood Major = £40
2008 Buy Kenwood Major = £400
1972 Buy approx 1 ounce of gold = £40
2008 Buy approx 1 ounces of gold = £450
If a loved one buys you 24ct gold jewellery, think of that food processor! :rotfl:I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Blimey its taken me ages to catch up with all your posts - but worth it:D
I am another one who isn't sure she's gonna make it under £4000. Pride comes before a fallI thought I would find it easy living on my own and being (I thought!) naturally stingy. And I have a couple of excuses
- I am including "making my new flat into a nice home" costs which I wasn't going to when I started (£581.76 so far) you have inspired me to include it.... so its all your fault
- I have certain principles (despite being totally unprincipled in other things LOL), won't go to Mr T, have 100% green electric, won't buy certain foods...
- I did really really really really honest guv with a cherry on top need my hair cut coz I was looking like Neil from the young ones
, I feel part of a nice little community here.
Any savings I do make are totally down to you guys (I'd never looked in a supermarket's reduced section without turning my nose up before for a start). THANK YOU!!!:T0 - I am including "making my new flat into a nice home" costs which I wasn't going to when I started (£581.76 so far) you have inspired me to include it.... so its all your fault
