Janey, do you have energy saving lightbulbs? This could be a compromise as they use less electricity....
Other than I have no idea but just to give you lots of sympathy - we used to have no central heating, man it was cold cold cold!!

Hi. Yes, we do have energy saving lightbulbs. Mum got them as a freebie because she's on HB and CTB but she hates them as they take a few seconds to come to full brightness so she passed them into me :D

Georgiasmum Well done for paying such a huge chunk off your debts!:T
It is hard when a married couple have different attitudes towards money. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in the same position. My OH is hopeless with money ( the main cause of our massive debt) so we compromised by me handling the finances and him having an allowance each month that he can squander as he wants.
He is not a gambler as such but he does buy a few scratchcards but then he spends his winnings on me :D
This board is great as you can waffle about moneysaving to your heart's content and everyone will be interested.
You are not alone. At least we can make it fun.:D

Georgiasmum - maybe your frugal achievements make him feel that he can't match what you have matched... as he earns less? Therefore his initial enthusiasm has waned, as he's seen what you've been able to achieve. I don't know - seems like he's reverting to something he's used to, gambling, who knows - for comfort and also possibly hoping that he'll win and get some of that cash back to impress you? I guess if he turns on you when you try to talk that's not great, can't think of what to suggest apart from continuing what you are doing for yourself until he's willing to talk... well done on the £915!

Need advice about 2 dilemmas really.

    1. Thinking about joining "Sealed Pot Challenge" as I already have lots of little "unsealed" pots but what about the lost interest that could be earned by salting this money away at the end of each month?

    2. Nights are getting lighter, ergo, lights need to be on less :D but, the quickest way to warm our living room up (old house) is to close the shutters and then I need the light on to see. So, warmth or light

Should add we have a log burner and only use the central heating (oil) when our fingers turn blue.
We're tough north of the border:D

Janey, I joined the Sealed Pot challenge but am only putting in the odd few coppers because I do this as an anuual thing anyway. Each year, I start with a new bank and feed it small change. At the end of the year, it gets wrapped up and given to the same member of the family as a Christmas present. I think it's the highlight of his day when he gets peace to sit and count it all out knowing that it's going to be changed into notes for spending on an annual trip he makes to a national exhibition. Pot stays sealed, it's one item off the pressie list and one person that I know for sure is happy with their gift. I normally manage about £30 - £40 in total. This year it's a home made bank :) (I also have the 'Papier Mache and other free hobbies' thread on here) :rotfl:

Heat or light - conserve all the energy you can, close those shutters and opt for the energy saving lightbulbs.... not to be out-frugaled today, have you all checked to see if you qualify for some FREE energy saving lightbulbs? :j

PS: The above offer is for 4 free lightbulbs and it ends on 8th March 2008.

Thanks Nyk. Mum got her original ones for her previous address so I have applied in her name at her new addresss to see if its accepted.

Out-frugalled ??? What about my frugalling today then...see previous post #2651.

And...use of kitchen appliances! The Rayburn has 2 joints of pork cooking, drying clothes festooned on it, clothes horses standing round it, a kettle warming in anticipation of next cup of coffee and loads of pine cones drying in the warming oven to light the log burner. It's also performing its usual function of heating the kitchen (well, up to 15C) heating all our hot water and the hot water tank (which is in the bathroom above the kitchen) also heats the bathroom and airs clothes.

    Beat that :rotfl:

And....2 chicken breasts (from Mum) poached in stock & herbs.Chicken cubed and put aside. Stock thickened, cooked potato cubes and peas added together with chicken. Made into 4 pasties with surplus shortcrust DH brought home from work(he's a cook) and enough left for a little top crust pie for my tea. Pasties frozen.

Aren't we busy little bees :D

Impressed with everyone! How do you manage to do it?!
Well done Janey on snaffling your mum's lightbulbs - I'm sure you can get some more for free if you swap them for used normal ones or something...
Dying to join in the frugal cookathon but I'm old mother hubbard today. Tesco online arrives tomo (if it turns up this time) so will have a big sesh of cooking and freezing. OH is back from hols tomo (yes he went without me - boo :rotfl: ) so might make a Sunday roast - any suggestions for left over joint of beef?

    Hello :)
I recently registered for the free Experian trial (and got cashback from the oily hand) and have used their free service several times now. Will go in search of your other post and respond there. How's that? :D
