Hello! I'm off out now to do some tutoring but just wanted to say hi and thanks for letting me join in
Will be back in a few hours with (I'm sure) tons of questions plus my plans for the year....I'm looking forward to the challenge!

Need advice about 2 dilemmas really.
1. Thinking about joining "Sealed Pot Challenge" as I already have lots of little "unsealed" pots but what about the lost interest that could be earned by salting this money away at the end of each month?
2. Nights are getting lighter, ergo, lights need to be on lessbut, the quickest way to warm our living room up (old house) is to close the shutters and then I need the light on to see. So, warmth or light
Should add we have a log burner and only use the central heating (oil) when our fingers turn blue.
We're tough north of the border:D0 -
Janey, do you have energy saving lightbulbs? This could be a compromise as they use less electricity....
Other than I have no idea but just to give you lots of sympathy - we used to have no central heating, man it was cold cold cold!!

Just wanted to share that on a very positive note, due to doing this mad challenge and the grocery challenge I have managed to pay £915 off my debts. They are small debts but I wanted to be rid of them within 18 months but will now be free in 9 months due to my madness/economising....
On a very depressing note my DH has rejected my economical ways despite his initial enthusiasm. He has returned to his old vice of gambling and I feel very sad. He is remorseful and I have confiscated his debit card. I am grateful that our finances are separate and that we have no joint loans and that the house is mine (I bought it before we met) but I am terribly sad that I am a married woman and it has to be this way.
It's a bit pathetic posting on a chat forum but I cannot talk to ayone about this. He is very tricky to talk to about it as well and he gets defensive and a bit 'nasty' if I press him to much or talk about getting help. The sums involved are comparatively small but he doesn't earn a lot and his squandering makes me resentful because I am left to shoulder all the household bills alone. The situation is complicated by the fact that he has a chronic illness and spends a fair amount of time in hospital. On the plus side his employer is supportive of him and his illness and I can manage if I am careful but I am lonely feel that I am struggling to do this 'frugal' challenge without a bit of encouragement.
Sorry to moan but I was feeling a bit tearful and I thought writing it down would really help. Everyone is doing really well and I am amazed by what you all manage!THE LONG AND THE SLOW ROAD SEEM TO APPLY TO DEBTS AND DIETS... THE TWO THINGS I WANT TO SEE THE BACK OF...:D0 -
Georgia's mum, I know it feels weird posting to a lot of strangers but I think it really helps so don't feel pathetic - you're getting it off your chest without rowing with the hubby and that's got to be good
You've done so well and even if he went back to his old ways, at least you got him thinking about it. Is there anyone he looks up to or respects that you could have a very confidential chat with, like a relative or something who might step in? It doesn't seem fair that you've got a partnership where one person does everything and shoulders all the burdens....
Chin up though, you're certainly in the right place and starting to tackle your debts :T - your OH will have his light bulb moment one day I'm sure and then you'll have loads of tips for him!

Aww georgiasmum don't know what to say but sending you a dodgy hug. :grouphug: Sometimes just 'venting' on here can help. XNothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0
