Do CCJs ever award these costs on top of the claim  as it seems a bit of a risk for them to pay for a solicitor to recover a similar amount if they win not to get that fee ?

Not unless you act unreasonably, such as not filing any WS / evidence or not turning up for the hearing.

Sending a letter with a copy of the court filing for costs in addition to the claim, bearing in mind what it states in the Practice Directions for which I’ve found the £50, would appear to be an intimidating tactic, almost bullying in nature and I assume we might get an offer to settle soon otherwise what’s the point?

Is it worth mentioning this at the hearing as it seems poor professional practice to me!

Just concentrate on the main task. There'll be no one there from QDR to respond even if the Judge is remotely interested.  It won't win (or lose) the case for you.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

The £50 is allowed. That's not the issue.

The costs are £312, which to my elderly friend is quite alarming. I’ve assured them it’s capped at £50 but the intimidation has worked and they’re now very worried and anxious. They’ve just recovered from a second bout of Covid and in their late 70s so it’s not been an easy time. I’m pretty certain if they had the money they’d settle.
