Best energy app to show usage

  • My issue with the ivie app is the sign up process. Chameleon really needs to follow Hildebrand’s lead. There should be no need to confirm an address by sending a copy of an energy bill or credit card details.

In future, energy price comparison websites will want to pull actual smart meter data for time-of-use tariff comparisons (with the consumer’s approval). It is likely that comparison sites will have to sign up with a Registered DCC Other User such as Hildebrand or Chameleon to make this possible. Security is important but the sign up process needs to be simplified.

When I registered with the Bright app, I had to send a copy of my energy bill. I was initially asked for the GUID, which wasn't recognised, perhaps because my IHD wasn't commissioned properly when the smart meters were installed.

anyone wanting people to send utility bills or credit card details for verification should definately not be sending random and unsolicited messages for people to try out there app! a legit company doing it that way just paves the way for scammers to be more credible taking the same approach.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

I've been using the Bright App for some time now and I can really recommend  it. Initially was using it without the hildebrand IHD ,  data was always a few hours old because of how it retrieved the data.
But once I finally got rid of the EDF IHD, and bought the bright IHD, it updates the bright app screen every 5secs and I can see my data on the graph per min. I only bought the ihd to allow me to see when I was exporting solar power to grid

Out of interest - for anyone who has tried different apps, do they all show exactly the same reads in terms of KwH used and £ spend?
  • Can I suggest a simple spreadsheet with up to date figures, do you really need all the bells and whistles.

Yes and no. Yes for electricity. No for gas. Gas meters record volume of gas used. Devices and Apps use a fixed CV to convert volume to kWh. There appears to be no industry standard on which fixed CV should be used. The difference though is very small.

Cost information will only be accurate if the supplier has sent the correct tariff information to the meters.

I've just installed the Bright app to try, like being able to pin point the spikes in use but sadly no tariff information, so that's down to my supplier then?

I installed Bright a week or so ago. My electricity tariff took about 36 hours to show (after the initial 24 hour period). I’m still waiting for my gas tariff.

Also the backfill of data is slow. I still only have December to September. It seems to take a few days per month to add in. Hopefully will have all 12 months of data by the end of the year.
The usage summary is really interesting.
    Saving for Christmas 2023 - £1 a day: #16. £90/£365
    December 2022 Grocery Challenge: £137.9/£150
    January 2023 Grocery Challenge; £79.12/£150
    February 2023 Grocery Challenge: £2.65/£120
    December NSD: 15/10
    January NSD: 15/15
    February NSD: 1/15
    Make £2023 in 2023: #20. £128.39/£2023
