..I dont really understand the technical side but if I am correct then I have a normal BT line - not ISDN - as we use BT Together service.
If you are only paying line rental to BT for their Together Option 1,2 or 3 package (either £10.50*, £16.50* or £25.50* per month respectively) then chances are you are using a normal BT Line. You could clarify this by ringing BT and ask them are you signed up to ISDN.

    * This price doesn't include cost of any calls you make and add an extra £1 if not paying by direct debit

I contacted BT and my phone line is a normal residential one - PSTN.
So off to call AOL to see if they can match anything from Madasafish or PlusNet

Have a look at the link in my last post. Compare AOL and Plusnet with a top quality ISP like Zen. There is a massive difference in all categories. I'm actually surprised at how low AOL scored, they have terrible ratings.

  • Hello Shrimpers Joy,

I'm glad to hear that everything has worked out for you and you do not have ISDN.

I noticed below that Rex_Mundi has pointed out the asdl comparison site http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/compare.asp. If you would like to compare us against other broadband companies you are considering; we are listed under our sister company Freenetname.

    Best of luck choosing providers.

    Kind regards,

    Wellcome Samara

Still a little way to go yet as regards your ratings I see.

For anyone considering changing/signing up for broadband. It is worth looking at the ratings for speed/reliability/customer service. After all it's no good paying a cheap price if the service you are going to get is no good. I chose to pay more, and in return I get a top quality service. This was the deciding factor for me in choosing Zen as a supplier.

Zen does look good in comparison to the others, but the £50 connection charge is alot. When I am looking at Broadband as a cheaper option to my current dialup
I will look at Madasafish on the ADSL website - but didnt compare them earlier as didnt know where they were!

When I spoke to AOL last night they quoted me that I could join AOL Gold (512kps) for £19.99 - I said that I wanted a faster connection and a reduced price - either what I am paying now (£15.99) or less, I have been with AOL for 4 years and they couldnt really come up with anything - when I suggested that I had looked into other Broadband suppliers and quoted some deals (PlusNet Plus and Madasafish) they could only offer me a months free Dial-Up (saved £15.99) so I have another month to investigate.

Basically I am going to be a light user (8 month daughter keeps us busy), I dont download much - just use the internet for emails and surfing so want a reasonable fast connection.

    Hi Shrimper

Have you looked at E7even?.....Not the best scores on the board, but you can't argue with the prices they are offering. They have a deal going at the moment. Have a look HERE .

    Not strictly true.

I had a quick glance at Virgin's t&c the other week and noticed they charge a cancellation fee of £50 if cancelled within 12 months.

Fortunately I placed my order in May, although I'm not connected yet (exchange goes live on 6th July in my rented house on Isle of Lewis - I've got 2MB BT connection at my other house!!). They've changed their T&Cs since then:

Cancellation charge:: For customers ordering the Service on or after June 7th 2005, Virgin.net reserves the right to charge you a cancellation fee of £50.00 (fifty pounds) if you cancel your Virgin.net Broadband account within 12 months of the date your Broadband Service was activated. Customers who are moving home will be exempt from this cancellation charge, provided that the Service is retained at the customer's new address.
