Just pressing the button by mistake for a second will do nothing.

In order to use the Intelligent Emergency Call system you usually need to first tap to open a cover flap.
Then, press and hold the SOS button until the LED in the button area is illuminated green.

In emergency situations, the system may trigger automatically

It works in one of two ways.
Automatically, in the event of an accident, it's tripped by the airbags or the seatbelt pretensioners firing.

Manually, by pressing and holding the button for at least 3 seconds.

Aaah yes, that will be why nothing happened - my wife stopped pressing very quickly as I pointed it out to her.

I hope to never need to find out whether it actually works

A nice man answers the call and says “Are you in need of emergency assistance?” You reply “no thanks my friend was just trying to open the sun roof” he replies “no problem if everything is Ok I shall end the call”.

Well, I guess people everywhere get a sense of expectation and if your car is giving out a spark, just in reach, the SoS button glowing in the dark.  Voulez-vous (aha)...
