Start by asking your estate agent for details of the estate agent who's selling the property at the bottom of the chain.
Phone them and find out first hand what the situation is.
(I did this once, and found out that my estate agent was lying to me - and there was no problem at the bottom of the chain.)
Explain to the estate agent (at the bottom of the chain) that your solicitor isn't ready, so there is no prospect of completion happening tomorrow - so he/she needs to find a way of managing his/her buyers expectations.
Ask who advised the buyer to fly over for completion tomorrow? If it was the estate agent (at the bottom of the chain), then the agent is an idiot - and they now have to manage the mess they've made.
(Or like I say - is this just a made-up story? If doesn't really sound enormously credible. )

I know there's risk it's all made up, but I do just want to get it over with either way so going to try everything I can to make it happen tomorrow. I'll hire a couple of separate 'man with van' and hire one myself, should be ok. My buyer is also understanding if I have some stuff left in the garage that I can collect over the weekend. My solicitor is still being risk adverse saying the funds might not come in time as he cancelled them yesterday and will have to re-request! I don't have any faith in him. So not ready for this, haven't arranged broadband/utilities/mail redirection or anything

So they have spent, what? £2K+ on flights; £1K+ on hotels maybe? Legal fees, survey and who knows what else.
And they are going to write all that off and fly back for the sake of a few days?
Possible, but doubt it, especially if you offer a compromise on the dates.0 -

My solicitor is still being risk adverse saying the funds might not come in time as he cancelled them yesterday and will have to re-request! - this is a serious concern, not overly risk adverse.. if you exchange with 1 day to completion and the bank cant get the money transferred in time, you'll be liable for any costs from delayed completion (bank would only guarantee to meet their timeline which is usually a few days).
I don't have any faith in him. So not ready for this, haven't arranged broadband/utilities/mail redirection or anything - less crucial, so don't add to your stress. Get some extra data on mobile sims, and then leave the rest to post completion. You'll be on a deemed contract for utilities, just take meter readings.0 -

It was a disaster, failed to complete
Didn't exchange contracts until about 1pm yesterday. Then in the afternoon 3 people at the bottom of the chain completed. Lots of miscommunication involving my buyer turning up with his vans saying his solicitor had told him completion was done but my solicitor saying it wasn't. He'd already completed on his sale and given keys.
It got to 5pm and the solicitor/estate agents were staying late to try and chase up the funds which hadn't arrived, but no luck and they had to give up at 5.30. The buyer was at my door and we were both just standing there with our phones ready to do key handover as soon as we got the go-ahead. Very stressful for everyone
So my buyer is now homeless, and I'm still the owner of my now empty house. Both of us with everything still on removal vans. I've had to stay with family over the weekend now, hadn't anticipated this so the kids have nothing apart from their school uniforms.
I have no idea what the vans are going to cost me, they had another job booked in so either had to hire another one to do the job or have had to unload into storage and charge me the same again for unloading, loading, and unloading again next week. Literally don't know how I'll find enough money to pay them.
The solicitor is blaming the estate agent for pushing us to do it like that, and the estate agent is annoyed with the solicitor. I know it's my fault and I should have insisted on a gap between exchange and completion but I was told the chain would fall apart if I did so I was talked into it. Ironically the guy at the bottom of the chain (who's fault this all is) is fine because he's got his keys!
It should complete on Monday now. I don't know if I will have any more issues from this?
