I do hope that octopus will allow us to set up a sensible DD based on expected usage and listening to the customer which bulb refused to do which is why we ended up paying monthly instead.

Thanks for the explanation, ariarnia.   The heaviest month of the year, January 2022, had this usage:

    01 January 2022 to 31 January 2022
    229.0 kWh electricity @ 19.7740 p/kWh
    1945.8 kWh gas @ 3.9870 p/kWh
Resulted in a bill of £144.82

That would be about £310 under the energy price cap.  So I definitely need to be more careful now.  We'll see how it goes but yes I think I will stick with Variable for now, even if it does look like switching to Direct Debit will be the best thing to do after the move to Octopus.

also 66 from the government towards that this winter so you would have to find about 240. no way of knowing how much you would cut back of course. but also we dont know how cold jan will be this year. so as long as you are happy you can find the cash then it sounds like a good option for you :)

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

  • Please tell me I'm wrong and Octopus are not taking Bulb's customer service dept?
I've had some poor experiences with some companies in the past but they go waaaay beyond the pale.
Already had a complaint upheld this year by the Ombudsman but it's as if they just couldn't care less.
I'm constantly in many hundreds of pounds of credit due to my DD being way over my usage. Yes I understand prices are going up, but to tell me they're increasing my DD by 60% without any discussion is not on. Despite several chat and email contacts they've just ignored me.
Until I cancelled my DD then of course they wanted to 'help'. They've constantly refused to acknowledge I want to set up a standing order, instead resorting to threats of surcharges and collections agencies should I fall behind or miss a payment. I'll set up a DD for a reasonable amount based on my usage, not on Bulbs desire to have my hard earned sitting in their account for power I've not used.
Sooner this move completes, the better.

I suspect the transferring Bulb employees might be given rather different standards to work to, going forwards…

And yes - I have sympathy for your issues with Bulb and their “enthusiastic” estimates of use. For no apparent reason they decided a couple of years back that we were suddenly going to use nearly double the amount of electricity we ever had done before - this in spite of our year-on-year use dropping over the time we were with them. As a result they decided to set our DD to a level which would have meant us paying for our entire electricity use for a year inside 7 months. I declined and asked for that DD sum to be reconsidered as it was not reasonable, they declined, I voted with my feet and left. Sadly my feet took me to Utility Warehouse who proved to be if anything, worse than Bulb! Still, I’ve escaped now, and the Ombudsman agreed with my assessment of UW!

You could always give Octopus a ring and ask to be switched now, with the new faster switching it can be done in a few days. Why wait?

My email from bulb said the same support team will look bulb customers for now.

I am actually looking forward to octopus taking over as they do allow you to be put onto a combined rate instead of having to change the economy 7 meter. Bulb claim they need a letter from an electrician or your landlord to say there are no storage heaters… coz obviously I am too stupid to know that my gas boiler pumps water through my radiators.  Sigh.
