Smoke alarms taped up in rented property

My MIL died when she smoked in bed and set fire to her flat, the smoke alarms going off were what the neighbours heard.
Although she died, the fire was contained to the bedroom and no other properties or people were hurt.
On a previous occasion her husband had come home drunk and put the chip pan on, then fallen asleep.
She was awoken by the smoke alarm that time and he was annoyed so wanted to remove them.3 -
We had a ( wired in ) smoke alarm in our last house that was very good at telling us when the bacon was cooked.
The dog used to go and stand under it , looking up, waiting for us to come and switch it off.
At least we knew it worked.1 -
@sheramber this is part of the problem actually. When the alarm goes off, their dog starts whining and getting increasingly distressed until it stops. It's very upsetting to watch. I'm assuming it hurts his ears.0

Info on that alarm would help.
Old fashioned ionisation alarms are great at detecting smoke but too sensitive in or near a kitchen... So optical ones are now the recommended ones in such locations. {In fact due to the radioactive material in ionisation alarms they are nowadays increasingly difficult to find.}
You can get alarms with 'hush' buttons to defeat temporarily / stop the noise when it's caused by toast or similar false alarms as well. (That button often doubles up as the 'test' button on many alarms).
I replaced a mains ionisation smoke alarm in our last bungalow with an optical one for the simple reason it drove me mad with false alarms when cooking. Immediate cure. Did the same in our touring caravan shortly after.
Smoke alarms are <very loud> deliberately and they hurt my human ears as well as canine!

I'm just aghast at this. .
Glad I don't have children, they'd be permanently aghast at me.
What you can do is ask your partner to move in if you feel their life is at risk and it would make you sleep more soundly in your bed. Beyond that, it's not your home so leave them to it.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20231
