Amazon claiming wrong item returned - I'm partially at fault.

So look at this from Amazon's angle.

You have returned an M2 drive, with no markings, to Amazon for a refund - the person handling the return will know what to look for and, where applicable serial check. If they can't serial check, you've basically just returned a PCB with chips on that could be anything - the only real glance way to know its an M2 is the contacts are on the end not the edge - but that's about all they have to go on.

So given they are expecting a packaged item and all they got back was a plastic sleeve with a PCB in they, as far as there expectations, haven't got the right item back.

And expecting Amazon to return the wrong item isn't realistic, if they do and you don't get it back its on them - you can see why they don't.

I think its unlikely this ends well for you unfortunately.
I made it quite clear when initially arranging the return that cardboard item packaging had been disposed of because I had destroyed it while opening it, despite my best efforts, and I was informed that it wouldn't be a problem so I would contend that they were not "expecting a packaged item".

But as I've said, I accept I am partially at fault for returning the item without the identifying sticker.

Anyway, since I've received this email from Amazon confirming I won't be re-charged, I'm going to draw a line under this now, at least until the 15th of November which is the deadline for when they said they would re-charge me.

Appreciate all the responses though, thanks.
  • Well it turns out this matter isn't resolved.   I've received another email from Amazon reminding me to return the item by the 21st of December otherwise I'll be charged.

Multiple emails to the department dealing with this have been ignored and I even emailed jeff@amazon.com last week and that's also been ignored.

I was on chat with someone just now trying to find out what was going on and they disconnected the chat when i was halfway through typing a response so that was fun ..

I think I'm resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to pay in full for my mistake unfortunately as I can't really see any other way forward unless head office respond in the next 11 days.

If you were a customer receiving the returned product I assume you wouldn’t want one with no serial number? There that item no has zero value so I don’t expect Amazon to refund you.

As I pointed out in the very first post, I’ve already received the refund.

A few people on this forum have had their Amazon accounts cancelled for similar.

You need to decide if this is a £65 hill you wish to die on. They may deduct that from your account balance on 21st Dec, or just cancel your account. Is that worth £65 to you?

At the moment I’m resigned to them recovering the refund and charging me the £65 pounds so if that’s the ultimate outcome then so be it, but I’m still hoping that I’ll get a response to my other email to head office.

Okay they want to get the refund back from you. Either way you’ve still returned an item that’s not faulty and can’t be resold.
  • Hi

IMO, not sure OP did, give them a call.

I'm a bit silly as I never, rarely returned anything but the colour of a smart speaker looked very different when I got it - I know that in pics they look different but not that different - I opened, did not like and started chatting - they did a returns label - guess what, I forgot to stick in my piece of the returns label left it outside the box and only noted that a few days later when one of our kids said, something about retirnd and enclosing your details. I rang them they confirmed they had not received it.  However, they said they would look into it and low and behold got my money credited the same day.

What I am saying that may help all is, any real problems, give them a call, works for me.

Thanks, but in my experience and I was only trying to help, I find many times people have problems when chatting/email as phone is the best. But I guess we are all different and I'm old school but it works for me.
    Thanks
