  • If you are comparing costs I imagine you will also need to add in the capital outlay of purchasing the dishwasher in the first place.

I may be wrong but it is probably more expensive than a plastic washing up bowl. :)

If you are starting from the position of having neither a sink nor a dishwasher then sure... if you already have both its a sunk cost.

In theory you should add the depreciation of value caused by using it and its maintenance but on the former I suspect people will simply use its age as there is no way to know how many washes its done and the later... do people get these things repaired these days?

Must have very dirty dishes if your dog is zero cost.

  • Nothing wrong with trying to save energy but convenience has a price as well and I'm happy to stand the cost of a dishwasher and look for energy savings in the bigger things like heating.

And I do something that most people would dislike but I always run the dishwasher in the intensive 70C mode.

    Why?

    • Hygiene - killing all bacteria is more likely at 70C
    • Dishwasher lifespan - many dishwasher clog at some point and fail, 70C washes keep those residues to a minimum and the filters clean

I confess to being a fan of dishwashers - ours ended years of teen squabbles about whose turn it was to wash up and turned the kitchen from a hellhole of piled plates and dirty mugs to a place of serenity. We have a slimline because the space available dictated that. It also made it 100% more likely that the plate or mug you wanted to use was actually clean and not a teenager's half-arsed version of clean.
I emailed the maker's CS and enquired about energy usage (not given in the manual) and was told that the 'eco' mode was about energy use AND performance so it didn't necessarily use less energy - it was the lowest amount of energy that the maker was happy with the performance of.

I have a tabletop dishwasher. It uses 6.5L of water and 0.5KWh on Eco. I use it once a week overnight on cheap rate to keep it in working order and to get a good wash on my dishes as hand washing doesn't always get the best results. To be honest, I can probably had wash with the kettle and a small bowl faster than it takes to load and unload the dishwasher.

The venerable Bosch dishwasher we inherited with the house uses about 1.8kWh on its 1.5hr 55-65°C main program and just under 1kW on its 45 minute 40°C quick wash program. It also has a 2 hour 50°C eco program that doesn't seem to use much less power than the main wash.

We've found that provided you're willing to hand rinse plates before putting them in and don't leave stuff standing to dry on, the quick wash is perfectly capable of giving a full load of clean dishes. So we've started using that in most cases, saving us a few units a week.

Unfortunately after a few loads the machine can smell a bit, so we now make sure to run it hot every few cycles (or when there's a lot of sun) to disinfect it.

Sounds like a newer machine would be more energy efficient, but not enough to be worth replacing a functioning machine.
