Installing Solar PV

  • Get an installer who is MCS registered  https://mcscertified.com/  If you don't any energy surplus won't find a buyer, I suspect.

    This site gives you installers in your area.  Also if a system of 33 panels you  need your Distribution Network Operator to be notified and be happy (certificate).

    These are the 2 essentials I have learnt from looking at sp installation.

    I came to £23-24K for a system that big, Roof or Ground mount?
    33x400W = 13.2kW, so (assuming £1.20/watt) £15-16k to install.
    Plus a 10kWh battery which should be under £6k (£6495 here but that includes VAT, so £5400 ex-VAT.)
    So £21-22k all in?
    And for a system that size, I'd hope you could do better than £1.20/watt.

    2.72kWp PV facing SSW installed Jan 2012. 11 x 247w panels, 3.6kw inverter. 34 MWh generated, long-term average 2.6 Os.

    Not necessarily. You can put a 100kWp array on your roof without the DNO’s PRIOR approval provided the inverter is limited to 3.86kW per phase. That said, the DNO has to advised after the installation. When the inverter output is more than 3.86kW per phase, then an application has to be made to the DNO before the installation takes place. When I applied 2 years ago, it took 3 months and cost £350.

    A 13.2kWp array will generate a lot of DNO scrutiny. That scrutiny may result in an export limitation on the system because the local infrastructure cannot take the load or, at worst, a requirement for a 3-phase supply.

    Roof mount over 3 aspects. One was north facing so I’d initially dismissed that as an option. Not sure why so many panels as the inverter would have to be huge, I suspect it wasn’t more than 5kw.
    My guess is the optimum would be 23 panels, 17 south and 8 east, and a 9.5kwh battery with a 6kw hybrid inverter.

    The inverter doesn’t need to be huge. It just needs to be balanced to your system to provide optimum output in the summer and winter. I have a 2 aspect 6.35kWp array with a 5kW inverter. On some summer days, my peak output flatlines but the smaller inverter gives me better output in the Winter. I suspect that a large part of your cost is scaffolding.
