It was actually the complete works of Shakespeare (and quite what the complete works are is something people would debate), and an infinite number of monkeys. Unfortunately, real monkeys are rather bad at the task, as a study at Paignton Zoo showed in 2002, preferring to press just one or two keys, use the keyboard as a toilet, and smash it up out of frustration.0

It depends on the species. The Sulawesi Macaque monkeys in Paignton Zoo do have opposable thumbs.0
