Hold back a small percentage of the total bill until you are satisfied the problem is resolved.  Refusing to pay any of the bill is unreasonable.
Of course, that's never been my intention, but demanding pay within 12 hours seems unreasonable too.
Is it really 12 hours though?  You said the work was done four weeks ago, and they billed and expected payment the same day.

Unless agreed otherwise in advance, most small jobs like this are done on the basis of payment on completion, or within a few days at most.

It's not unreasonable or unusual for small traders to at least hope for payment on completion of the work.  Whenever I've had work done, I've known the approximate cost at least before the work starts so make sure I have the money available to pay them when they finish.

Really depends what you determine the job being done as. I'd argue a guttering that ended up leaking more than the original wasn't.

I've paid up and never heard again about them trying to fix a fourth time. Would it be wrong to leave a bad review?

I'd ask them again to at least discuss or you will leave a bad review - if you feel thats worthwhile
