It's very rare to have meter reader round now as we are expected to read the meter ourselves and send it in either via our online account or a phone call. It would be a good idea to start doing this monthly from now.

Yea it's not like I've know they been about to knock and avoided them, and I really didn't know you shouldn't rely on estimates.

If you cannot afford to pay this energy debt, this fund may help. I think you have to seek money advice support first to qualify though. https://britishgasenergytrust.org.uk/who-can-apply/

Over the last two years did you receive any emails requesting a reading ?

What was the 2 year old reading and what was the one you gave recently
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Too Long Didn't Read. A summary for those that won't read the whole thing.
  • It is unlikely that  you are being charged for all the underestimation at today’s rates, to get £900 underpaid in 2 years indicates that you have been using around £37 worth of gas a month more than you have been paying for which with estimated readings is not that difficult to do even at the cheaper prices.
  • I would contact British Gas and arrange for them to install meters in your property.  Once they are up and running, they will automatically submit meters for you and you won't have estimated bills in the future.
Although I have smart meters, I still take meter readings regularly, but I don't need to submit them to my supplier as they are already receiving them.

I really didn't know you shouldn't rely on estimates.
Many people haven't untill the unit prices per unit have gone up, more and more people are waking up to cheap energy days have over.

It is very likely the £900 is about right, when you get a break down of your bill you will see there are estimated usage for the earlier period's. That's not to say it won't get it reduced to £700, consider yourself lucky if it gets below the £700.

Many people think they have low usage till they see a "them few number difference's on the meter" have a higher rate per unit.

Moving forward take pictures of your meter reading monthly and submit them on a set day of the month make it a new monthly routine, or get a smart reader.
Also make not of the readings in a spreadsheet then you can see what you daily/monthly/yearly usage figures are. You can then make a better educated decision if you can cut back on your usage, to bring down costs/outgoings.

Could the person you spoke too just have taken  the recent rates and the last reading given and multiplied it by the October prices?
I would get into the habit of submitting monthly readings, that way you will know how much your using.
Someone please tell me what money is
