Ripping software

I am trying to rip all of my music CD's and Video DVD's to my PC - To save physical space
WMP does not appear to do this ?
Freeware sought that does this at high speed (ie Not at normal playing speed) any suggestions ?

I've always used whatever is built in to Windows. Being a computing ignoramus it usually takes me a while but I get there.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Media Player will do the CDs, but not the videos.

You need to use MakeMKV (other options are avialable) and maybe Handbrake if you need a smaller file size for DVD/Blu-Ray videos.

Please be aware:  video takes up a lot of disk space.  Especially uncompressed video.  More disk space than you probably think it will.

I've always used EAC (Exact Audio Copy) as my go to CD ripper. Arguably one of the best free audio ripper there is.

I also use VLC as a media play but it can also rip DVD and blu-ray, but I've never used it for that purpose so can't comment to how good it is.
  • Thanks all - I did eventually get WMP to rip the CD's
next question - which company offers the best ,money for buying them ?
Music magpie offers me between 50p and 1p (not joking)

Technically speaking you don't have the right to rip your CDs and DVDs or make copies of them.  You're supposed to buy another (digital) copy and separate copies for use in the car or whatever.  But of course what you're supposed to do and what you actually do are two entirely diffferent things.

Unfortunately most commercial disks and music collection are practically worthless on any format especially CD - the real money is in obscure vinyl, limited releases (less than 1000 usually) and releases that happened that were never meant to be released that you happen to have.

Compilations from one artist (Greatest Hits or Best of or whatever) may be worth slightly more.  High profile compliations (like the Now series for example) may be worth slightly more.  Most other compliations?  Well unless they happen to feature a relatively rare track, probably not half as much as you paid for it.

That used to be the case but now you are allowed to make a copy for your own use so long as you retain the original.  Of course whether anyone would get in trouble if the copied their CDs and then got rid of them is questionable.

Actually no you're not.  You were for about seven months but the High Court put paid to that:
https://www.copyrightuser.org/understand/exceptions/private-copying/ - "following a judicial review filed against the UK government, in July 2015 the High Court quashed the regulations introducing the exception [re: private copying]. As a result, the private copying exception is no longer part of UK copyright law,"

AFAIK this is still the case.  But yes, you're quite unlikely to get "caught", because its one of those things that's questionable as to whether its worth pursuing as a "crime" as such.  Maybe for some "ringleader" type operation on a painfully massive scale, but for a single Joe Bloggs?  Unlikely.

I do have a few 12" vinyls that may be worth £'s ?

I use BDlot DVD ISO master (free) to rip DVDs to ISO, but it offers no compression so files are large, and there are no options to remove menus etc.
I use VLC to 'play' the ISOs on my PC/android tablet
