Couple of questions with that
Did the engineer put a new socket in?
Have you multiple phone sockets in your home?

If you didn't have a new socket all I can think of is the engineer moved the router to the master socket.

BT doesn't charge if you move to their social tariff.
Will have a look to see if Vodafone does.

Was delighted when BT seamlessly moved us to the social tariff with no penalty for another 15 months to go of our current contract. Bonus too that the prepayment of services on the previous bill resulted in a credit position on next bill, refunded quickly.

I believe you can, the £4 add on for evening & weekends and  £8 for anytime and mobile calls.
If you need calls then I would have thought BT would be better value,  but would depend on when and how long you call for.
