Out of date Photo Licence

I thought I would get a reminder if my licence was out of date. I have never received a reminder and have just noticed it is past expiry date. The categories on the reverse give me until age 70. Am I in trouble?

You need to get the renewal application in immediately as you are covered I believe once the application is in and being processed.

Until then I believe you are at risk if caught driving.

Only if you're caught!  You need a new photocard if you want to continue driving.

I let mine go … months … out of date! Quickest way I found to renew was sending off the appropriate form in the post, took just over a week to get the replacement. This was a couple of months ago.

OP, your entitlement to drive (if it’s a UK licence) is valid until you reach 70. 

Not updating your photocard Is a relatively trivial offence which is rarely if ever prosecuted.

However, these subtleties aren’t always understood by PC Plod, so best to get it updated  ASAP.

Photocards must be renewed every 10 years to ensure the image is a true likeness of the driver.Expiry dates are displayed in section 4b on the front of cards.

If that were the case then why can you renew it with a nine year old passport?

Because the photograph is not over 10 years old.

Really? I renewed my passport in 2020, and my photocard a few weeks later. For some reason DVLA used the photo from my old passport, which by definition was more then 10 years old, and probably 11 or 12
