Southern Electric Price Fix 2008 - actual charges?

I need some help - can anyone who is actually on this tariff since October 2007 tell me what they are actually being charged as there is a small discrepancy between the switching sites and the prices on Southern Electric's own website. It would be even better if you're in region 15 (Northern) as that is where I am!

The operators I've spoken to at their call centres seem helpful but are not sure what the correct prices are as they have a different set of prices from the 2!

I was having a look at this too.

I did a price comparison with Energyhelpline & Moneysupermarket who both quote the same rates. Going to the Hydro Electric website prices are slightly lower so I did a comparison through their website.

The difference between Monesupermarket and Hydro electric was about 42p. Energyhelpline was around £1.34 but they had rounded their figures to the nearest pound whereas Moneysupermarket & Hydro Electric were exact.

How much of a difference is there?

    Hi Far,

I do keep telling people that these companies tend to all be as bad as each other, call centres eh. At least this should be easy to find out though!

Have a look at this link to their prices for standard & E7 for NE1 7.

Does this help? If not, the prices link on the left hand side will let you put your post code in to get all their tariff prices. Won't work for such as E10, Supertariff etc though.

The link you gave me Terry was the same one I was looking at earlier. They offer 2 different Price Fix 2008 tariffs - one is Price Fix 2008 Standard and one just plain Price Fix 2008 (nothing to do with E10 either). There are interesting differences between the prices there and on the Energyhelpline and MoneySavingSupermarket switch sites:
    • On the Southern site, gas is priced at either 2.83p (PriceFix 2008) or 2.94p (PriceFix 2008 Standard) for the starting block; on the switching sites it is 3.00p.
    • The next block of gas is charged at 2.00p or 2.09p respectively on the Southern site and at 2.12p on both switching sites.
    • The (non-E7) electric has similar differences - 13.48p for the first block on PriceFix 2008 on the Southern Site, 13.98p for PriceFix 2008 Standard on their site, 14.33p on the switching sites.
    • The next block of electricity is priced at 7.29p on their website, 7.57p under Price Fix Standard 2008 on their site, 7.75p on the switching sites
Southern offer a 6% Direct Debit discount according to the switching sites but it's unclear if their prices show this. If they do then something is wrong as the calculated price is out by nearly £80 or so but with a manual 6% discounted using the switching site prices at least the switching sites make sense!

I followed your suggestion Jem and this suggested I could get a £3 saving over Scottish Power Online Energy - by my calculations, and the switching sites, I think it's actually £5 dearer but at least this is closer to what the switching sites suggest. I am thoroughly confused now  Anyone have any ideas what to do?

If you look at the lowest elec price in bullet 4, it is -6% when compared to the switching site 7.75. So, without checking I'm guessing the rets are the same??? The middle unit price is actually 3% on the 4th bullet.

The same was asked on another thread and Cardew believed that the lowest price maybe due to a internet billing. Sounds plausible but the only real way is for SE to confirm it.

EDIT: it does come out just below 6% on them if you apply the same calculation (100/high price*low price) and the inbetween comes out around 2-3%.

Interesting information - certainly for the gas the difference is more or less bang on 6% once you take into account rounding but on the electric the difference seems very slightly more but perhaps its because its late and I'm not all that great at maths these days! Interesting news about a previous thread on this - I'll certainly dig around for that. What a shame that a call centre can't answer these questions - the tariff is attractive as, if the switching sites are correct, we'd pay a £5 premium to fix our prices until next December and this seems prudent especially with price rises almost certainly on the way :(
  • when I was with powergen just over ayear ago they automatically put me on that what they didn't tell me was that my bills would raise 3 fold on it...I would be very wary of price fixes...I was paying no more than 50-75 a quater this went up to well over 150 a quarter then my electric was around 100-150 depending what time of year it was this went up to 300 a quarter thats why I like ebico I have not had a bill over 60 for my gas or over 150 for my electric and thats the winter ones december-march....they hide hidden charges within the fix...:Dbe wary:D

Pls be nice to all MSer's
There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.
Tomorrow never come's as today is yesterday and tomorrow is today:confused:

I live in Cardiff and Swalec, I think part of Scottish and Southern Energy Group, is my provider.
They offer the price fix and I am keen to budget next year. I am a little confused by the earlier posts and wondered if you guys would opt for this price fix or not?

    Thanks

It depends on how much it will cost you to go on this tariff compared to what you get elsewhere. For you it might be much dearer if this is your local supplier as the local supplier is usually the dearest.

For me it is an extra £4.36 more over the whole year and I will get £30 cashback. So it may be worth it for me to avoid likely price rises in the new year.

Switched to Swalec from British Gas about 18 Months ago. Set up direct debits for both gas and electric. Filled out direct debit forms there and then with swalec advisor and that was it. Never really took a great deal of notice of paper bills as direct debits in place, or so I thought! - i now know that was stupidity on our behalf! Just had a review with our bank and whilst checking over all direct debits, discovered that Swalec's DD was only set up for gas and they had nothing set up for electricity. Gone on Swalec website to check electric bill and its up at £540! What do I do now. I cannot afford to pay this all in one go, is it my fault that I had'nt noticed before now that bill hadn't been paid or is this neglegence on Swalecs part as they set up dd for Gas and should have for electric but did'nt. i haven't contacted them yet, can anyone advise me on what i should do.

    contact them.
Tell them what happened, ask for as long to pay it back as it has taken to build up.
I'm a bit suprised they let it go on this long with out reminders etc.

They will sort out a way for you to pay it back.
