Hi Forum.
Moved into my house a year ago. Solar panels and FIT was registered with Utility Warehouse with previous owners. We moved in with Octopus who said they would transfer everything. We asked UW to make sure they transferred. All was OK and Octopus was even paying but after a few months they said the transfer had not happened. UW said they had made the transfer. I have been bouncing between both (spending hours on the phone) to try to get clarity as to where the FIT is registered so I can get this sorted. One of these companies has been benefitting of the electricity put into the grid, just not me.
Could you nice people please advise what I can do as a next step as am quite frustrated. No one seems to accept they have responsibility and I don't know where to look or how the process should work.
Many thanks,
S

Your solicitor should have arranged for transfer of FIT to you from the previous owners and have all the msc certs etc in your legal pack.
  • Check the FIT Register:

    FITRegister@Ofgem.gov.uk

I don’t understand why you thought that you needed to transfer your FIT contract. The FIT and supply contracts are separate: that is, you can transfer your supply transfer at will and leave your FIT contract with the original FIT payer.

As said above, the previous FIT recipient needs to sign a transfer form for you to receive the payments.

My solicitor says that this should have been done by me very much like transferring water, phone, electricity etc. "Notifying the energy providers about a change of ownership and in relation to the FIT payments is for the new owners to carry out themselves, in the same way they would notify their gas, water and electricity suppliers of the change of ownership."
Have contacted OFGEM who confirm that UW still have the FIT registered in their name. They are again not moving very fast with anything.
    Feel stuck.

I suspect the reason that UW hasn’t transferred the FIT contract to Octopus is because you are not entitled to the FIT payments. You MUST get the previous owner to assign the FIT payments to you. This doesn’t transfer automatically on a house sale/purchase. I am still not sure why you want to go to the trouble of changing the FIT payer. The FIT payments are set by Government.

Have you and the seller signed a form similar to this and sent it to UW?

    Hi again.
Quick query for people who may know this.
Having moved my  FIT from UW to Octopus finally earlier this year, they are still faffing about with issues. Having signed a contract with them in Jan 24, they now tell me that they want me to sign a new one as I cannot be paid for Generating and Exporting as that is two payments. Is there any truth in this? I always thought this was the point and the government incentive. If anyone has a link to the Legislation or website that clarifies this I would appreciate it. Thanks
  • You should be paid for generation.  You should also be paid for export but this could be done in a number of different ways.  Do you have a smart meter as that opens up multiple possibilities for your export payment?

Sadly no meter just yet. I keep sending them readings but they have created a mess with various accounts which dont match. They are saying that I cannot be paid twice for generating and the for exporting the same power.

The FIT does just that, pays for overall total generation and then it either pays for a deemed export total of 50% or pays for a metered export figure.  Are you trying to retain the FIT generation total and get paid for metered export by giving up the deemed export?  Should be possible, sure others here are doing just that.

Getting paid for actual export will need a smart meter and an export MPAN.

Meantime you should receive payment for what is called “deemed export” , this is set at 50% of your generation.

The FIT generation payment is totally separate, but often the 2 are combined into one payment if you are on deemed export.

Octopus inherited my FIT payments when Bulb went under.  They have no problem paying me for generation and deemed export.
