I remember my mum boiling up what were known as "dishcloths" in a saucepan on the stove and giving them a stir with wooden tongs.  I think she also used that pot for cooking though.  When my children were babies I had a nappy bucket where the rinsed but not washed nappies awaited their turn in the washing machine mellowing in Milton fluid I think - makes me feel queasy just thinking about it.  At least the bucket had a lid so that made it ok 🤦‍♀️

I have done both things myself. I also used to do tea towels but I hacve a very large pan which was kept for boiling stuff.
  • I used to have a bucket with a lid and have napisan and water in it for any clothes that had sick/poo on them, really worked and when they were washed there were never any stains. Set up my dd and ds with same system when they had children
We keep our cleaning cloths dry in a bucket and wait until there is enough to put a boil wash on the machine.  Our dishcloths are in a tub of bleach until ready for washing, generally with the whites.
  • Gosh yes, I remember nappy buckets...the good old days...lol

I can remember MIL boiling socks in a pot on the stove. Mr SA’s brother had a real problem with sweaty smelly feet. Hopefully she didn’t use it for cooking too 🤮

Sorry if I’ve put anyone off their dinner 😬
I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)

Did the socks not shrink on a boil wash??  :D

  • ROFL at the socks!

As for cleaning cloths, as used they get lobbed in the machine and then go through with whatever was is going on next. As we all learned during covid (or at least, hopefully we did!) it is the soap, NOT the water temperature that does the trick for getting "nasties" off hands, and this applies just the same to anything else too, so I don't see any point in separating them out, plus washing them as I go along means we need less of them. I usually do a separate load with tea towels, towels and/or bedding as those have a scoop of stain remover added as standard as well - clothes which have any marks get spot treated before washing. Dishcloths I give a soak in the sink with a splash of bleach in the water every now and again and then those just get  a rinse through before being lobbed in to the machine too. Not a fan of making more work for myself here!

  • That's very true @EssexHebridean, your comment about it being the soap that cleans it. And yet we were always brought up to think that very hot water was the answer. Strange isn't it?

  • So, Good Afternoon to one and all. A very damp, overcast and chilly day here. But in true MSE style, I am sat at my computer wearing a body warmer ( or gilet if you are posh...lol) and a pair of fingerless mittens. Heat came on for 2 hours this morning, set on a low temp and I have not put it back on yet. Hoping I can survive till at least 5pm.  I did go for walk first thing, so that warmed me up a bit.

Today being the last day of the month, means that the normal mortgage payment has gone out, but I won't update signature until it shows on the BS app. Tomorrow I will be making any over payments that I can. Won't be much this month, but hopefully a lot more next month.
This morning I have been sat doing some shuffling and just about to amend my signature.

Had an email from one of our creditors, saying there is a deal available and to ring them to find out what it is. I emailed back and said, we don't do phone calls, so please can they email us the offer. Still waiting......

Looks like P/fc is picking up a bit today, had 4 so far. As usual, the others are all plodding along slowly.

Meal plan is done for the next 10 days, and doesn't look like I need to buy too much on the grocery this week, which is always good news.
Just realised the time and have had no lunch, so off to put the kettle on.

Have a good afternoon everybody and thanks for reading as always.

  • It's very chilly here too, I've resisted putting the heating on as well, opting for a hoodie instead... the dog doesn't think I made the right choice!
