I would say if we're at risk of blackouts, you could consider turning them off during the high-risk hours (4-7pm most likely) on such days, depending on how much power they actually draw.  Obviously it's up to you, I'm just coming from the angle of one of the people who would be concerned about them being an unnecessary strain at times of very high demand.

Have you worked out how much power they'll draw?

thats an idea. 3-4 should include most kids coming home from school and it probably doesn't get dark much before 3 anyway. 8-10 is probably good for people in the evening who want to walk around and look at the lights (if they do that in your area?)

we normally drive to look at the illuminations in blackpool (only a couple of hours away) but this year I'm thinking we might see if theres something a little closer to home we can do.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

This will undoubtedly enrage those people who set their own rules and then force them on everybody else. Loads of them around on our local Facebook group during Covid - rather than follow the government rules they created their own and then criticised other people who just followed the government guidance.

So there'll probably be people who think you're a terrible person for using electricity in such a frivolous way but unless the government gives guidance about not doing it I'd consider that it's really up to you. If the heavy weight of that moral decision to "waste" a few watts of electricity doesn't keep you awake at night, I'd go for it!

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." -Thomas Jefferson 1802

Rationing and rolling power-cuts are expected. No doubt a new group of Wardens like Hodges will be demand you "Put that light out!"

How much do Christmas lights actually cost to run? I wouldn't have thought they generally draw much power?

I commented on the Energy Support and Advice Facebook group the other day, in response to a question about how to cut down on the expense of heating a hot tub over the winter. When I suggested that it would be best not to waste energy on such a thing during an energy crisis, I got laughed out of the place.

Indeed. I was told that there was no gas shortage, that I was promoting asceticism, etc. They just weren’t having it.
