giving whoever gets support a lump sum payment is the most likely solution though? its easy to administer compared to identifying houses for a bill reduction given different payment methods and everyone entitled gets the same so no gaming the system. i;ve been looking at the various groups who got the 'extra' support payments this time around and think thats probably a good indication of who might be seen as needing extra help next time.

if i'm remembering right then rishi's help was the 150 for low council tax bands 400 for everyone and then 650 for low income/income based benifits plus a top up for pensioners winter fuel allowance. if we take out the 400 for everyone then that could be the groups that get help next time. or theres the new way of working out the warm home discount that is supposed to target more help at people with highest need that are low income. from what ive read on here its a bit of a blunt instrument but it could be that by next winter they've had enough time to look at how it worked this winter to decide thats the best way to target help.

but given what rishi was saying when he announced the 400 for everyone and the fact there's an election next winter then i wouldn't be surprised if theres something for everyone. but it might be in the form of grants for energy saving or subsidising the energy suppliers to do more of the time of use discounts to encourage cutting back like we're seeing from octopus this winter.

i'm not a fan of either party but i really hope he doesn't come up with something too exciting or diffferent. the last thing we need is another election or pm before april. i dont care who is in number 10 but i'd like something to stay the same for more than 5 mins for a while!

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Agree on all of that. We definitely need some stability. I was thinking of the extra whatever it was for those on UC etc. as well as the £400 for everyone - or whatever amounts are now considered appropriate.

Now that the free TV licence has been scrapped for the over 75s, I don't think there is much of a market for trading MiLs. But I dare say there is an app out there if you really wanted to go there.

In my case it would be a halloween party with MIL attending with a black pointy hat, broom and black cat :) Divorced now, but it would be fair to say MIL and I never really warmed to each other

Due to my parents seperating and both remarrying when I was young, I presented my OH with two MILs. She's never really forgiven me for that! :D

We do seem to have drifted somewhat

Starting to see a few "good news" stories like this one and the one earlier in the week about the flotilla of LNG ships looking for someone to sell it too.

And we've had a mild October - are we in for a mild winter? And government borrowing costs are coming back under control. And for now at least we have what looks like a stable sensible government.

We've a long way to go but I'm starting to think that things might not be as bad as we thought. Not meaning to belittle the problem in any way as clearly for some folks the nightmare continues, but there are a few tentative signs of things heading in the right direction.

Thanks, that report is reassuring and worrying all at the same time.  There are some frightening numbers about just how little storage the UK has, so just how vulnerable we are.
It does look like things are calming.  BUT (big but), have you seen the weather?  We've had cooler summer days, it's nothing like as cold as it should be.  It's hardly surprising there's a surplus, as it's not being used and there's nowhere to store any more.  I doubt it will stay the same when there are icy gales and blizzards.

With gas being as (relatively) cheap as it currently is, now is a good time for Rough to re-open. It's a shame that only 20% of its capacity is available but (according to that atricle) that's still 50% of the national total!
