Santander 1 year fixed ISA

Opened the above this morning 3.7%.
Tried to transfer my Skipton using the online form. Ok til I got to the account No. Skipton is 9 digits Santander form only accepts 8. Telephone help not much help, suggested putting it into the roll number which I did but it still wants a number in the account box. Do you think it is ok to put 00000000.

Not Skipton - but I used to have an account with one of the building societies which used to say omit the first digit if the number was being used external to that society.

Maybe check if it's something like that?

Edit: Ah ... just looked at their paying in instructions - I bet you need to use the account number for Skipton itself, with your roll number as reference, but dont take that as a fact - hopefully someone else with better info will confirm......

See my edit above and wait for someone else to confirm!!

  • I second steveksullivan's edit suggestion. Skipton's generic account details  (20-78-91  70798924) with your 9 digit account number used as Roll Number.

This is quite a common issue for Building Societies, where the sort code and account number is theirs and the roll/reference number (usually 9 digits or more) is yours. The Principality and Nationwide are two that I've dealt with that spring to mind.

One option would be to put the Building Society's details in the account number and sort code sections, with your account number as the roll (reference ?) number which is likely to be the procedure you'd follow if you were to make a cash deposit.

I've only come across this in the past when posting off paper transfer forms and in those instances, I've either added another box to the account number section myself (!) or put it in the roll number section and either left the sort code/account number sections blank (which is doesn't sound like you can do online) or used the building society's details, hence my suggestion.

  • Thanks to you both. I was just about to post that I had sorted it myself. I looked at the paying in instructions and found that the sort code and account number is Skiptons with Barclays and my account number goes in the roll number.
Pity the Santander expert I spoke to, having waited a lifetime on the phone could not elaborate.
