If you get stopped by the police and they inspect your tyres can they give you a fine or points on your licence or both if the tyres are bald

And rightly so, especially at this time of year.

There are "wear indicators" - little bars across the bottom of the tread - at 1.6mm, the legal limit.

For practical purposes, I would recommend starting to shop around for new tyres as soon as they get to 3mm. Below this, the amount of grip is significantly reduced.

This is one reason I always get my oil & filter changes done at National Tyres - not only do they do this cheap, they also always note your tyre tread depth, in case they can try to sell you some new ones!
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Before soemone says is it me with the bald tyres, its not, i check my tyres regulary as i want to be safe, its someone i know who has bald tyres, if the driver has had his licence for under a year is the penalty worse as opposed to someone who has had a licence for 3 years

It matters not how long the offender has held a licence.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I believe this also applies if your spare tyre is un-roadworthy. It is not an offence however if you do not carry a spare. :)

As said it is 3 points per offence, although it willk only count as 3 total for totting up purposes. As a newly qualified driver, this is halfway to a revokation of the drivers licence, 6 points in 2 years mean you have to start as a learner again, so yes it is the same but worse, if that makes sense, as just one speed offence would mean "L" plates theory and practical tests etc. etc.

£60 per offence only if a fixed penalty notice is offered and accepted. If you go to court, the fine could be £2500 per offence.
  • In a way he is more likely to get double here

In my own experience, 1 tyre barely under they will tell you to get it done if you say you didnt realise

If you have 2 it shows that maybe you didnt care and hammer you
