Cancelled flight refund and compensation

Looking for advice please.

My son and three friends had their flight to Greece cancelled the day before they were due to travel, wizz air offered alternative flight but it was from a different airport and the day or 2 after original. So they had no option but to take a refund, they have now tried compensation claim eu261 but its been rejected. The reason given is because they took refund option. From what I have read up on this it looks like they should still be able to claim.

Advice would be welcome please

Irrespective of any refund, compensation is due, if the cancellation was not due to Extraordinary Circumstances and less than 14 days before the travel date.

What was the reason given for the cancellation?

Not 100% sure, but as far as I know it wasn’t extraordinary circumstances.

I will follow it up as I think they are trying to avoid.

Are they trying to claim the set compensation amount ? -  it appears from what you have stated about the circumstances- that they are entitled to claim this  .

Or are they trying to claim for the expense of an alternative flight that they booked themselves to get to their destination? They  will not be entitled to this having received a refund already ?
