  • All the posts on here are CORRECT. i can tell you this. If you have cover away from the home you will be covered. CPW wanted me to pay £40 every three months to cver my handset. I am insured with Direct Line and have just got off the phone to them. They will cover my phone and phone only so make sure you back up all the stuff you have on a spare memory card , that includes music pics atc or better still store all your music and pics on you pc/laptop. With regards to contract phones you only need to provide proof of ownership ie your airtime agreement , box or something from you provider to say that phone is yours. Make sure you have international calls barred on you phone. For Orange customers you can do this in your phones menu. The default code is 1111 and you can change that to anything you want. Not sure what other networks have as the code. You can though call your network up and bar int' calls. If your phone is stolen they will prob only make calls to other mobiles or landlines or text but you may have bundles anyway.
I have a £0 excess with Direct Line but please check yours. Orange want £6 per month to cover their phones and the only time you are going to claim is if it is stolen or lost and they charge a £15 'admin fee'. So to make one claim you will pay 6x12 + £15 = £87 and your home insurance will charge the first £50 comman but as before i have a £0 excess with Direct Line. As regards the cost of a repair it will still be cheaper than paying insurance.

Yup - mobile phone insurance offers terrible cover, often with an excess, and the value of your phone after a year may well be less than the cost of the insurance!

Why not put the premiums in a jam jar? Hopefully by the time you need to "make a claim" you'll have saved enough to replace the phone!
  • I've currently got insurance for my samsung u700 and i'm thinking of cancelling it, i've never lost or had a phone stolen in my life, i didn't pay a thing for this one so i hardly think its worth it. Now because i already has insurance on it, can i cancel it any time?

I hate paying for insurance, the only insurance that seems worthwhile in life to me is car insurance and public liability insurance for horse riders.

Sorry to rant off in a tangent about insurance but its an interesting topic worth knowing other people opinions and experiences.

  • I was recently a victim of phone theft while i was playing football, but didnt have any phone insurance. I did have however personal possessions cover along with my contents insurance. (which worked out a lot lot cheaper than phone cover on its own).

After providing insurance company with my contract details with O2 and police crime number etc. i was reimbursed the full amount of what the phone would have cost if i bought the phone new from O2.
£25 was taken off as excess, so for my phone i got a total of £215. The same phone which i have now bought from carphone warehouse.
I would advise checking you contents insurance/personal possessions cover to see if mobile phones are covered because if they are the savings can be good, and i have made money out of the process. By no means am i advocating phone theft or trying to fake a phone theft as i did have to make a statement to the police which did take its time, but its worth checking before taking out seperate phone insurance....

I use Orange Care, its £6 a month and 3 months ago i got my phone stolen it would of cost me around £200 to replace it. Orange had a new one to my home with a new sim within 12 hours of calling them. As i dont have any other insurance to claim from it was well worth it in my case.

Does insurance cover you if you lose your phone - I think mine fell out of my pocket in a taxi and I am on holiday so can't check my policy details.

I wouldn't buy insurance for the phone (ala Dixons' Coverplan) as it should be covered by household goods, but I do have the gold insurance on my O2 phone (£5 per month). I took it out mainly because it covers me against abuse of my phone (imagine your phone is stolen and someone uses it to ring an expensive phone number, you're covered). As far as I am aware, household or contents insurance wont normally cover this. (or am I wrong?)

Either way, I just b0rked my phone and had to make a claim. My premiums won't go up and I will have a replacement without having to pay an excess (assuming they manage to get one in stock)....

So assuming it turns up, I am still (reasonably) happy.
