In a smallish kitchen, cupboard space is always going to be at a premium and, for me, giving over a cupboard as a rubbish bin would be a waste of space (forgive the pun). Our kitchen is only 10' x 10' and we have a separate bin.  It is tucked out of the way so doesn't affect access to any cupboards.

We have two pull-out bin *drawers*, each with two bins - one for non-recyclables, one for glass (which our council doesn't collect), one for recycling and one for food waste.

Previously we had large free-standing Wesco bins and imho these looked untidy/it was always an issue finding space for them...plus our dogs enjoyed the challenge of getting into them which has never happened in the 4.5 years we've had the ones in cabinets 😉

In this house before we fitted the new kitchen a mouse got into the free-standing bin which was enough to put me off too, lol! Assuming there's space, it's built-in bins for me from now on.
  • built in with a lid covering. First thing I did at this house was remove a cupboard shelf and retrofit an in-cabinet bin system...

Our council recycles everything except for non-stretchy plastic packaging and styrofoam, so I have a combination of 2 integrated pull-out bins and a 50/50 split free-standing bin. Unless you have a lot of recyclables, a free-standing bin is probably adequate.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Just had new fitted kitchen this week. 2 built in bins, mixed recycling and waste. Best thing we ever had apart from new Quooker tap which is amazing.  Partner finds she can prepare food, open waste drawer and sweep waste straight in. So quick and easy, particularly if you make sure front bin is for waste.

Over the last few years I try and do better for the environment and the impact I make so I have...
I have a recycling bin close to the back door so all plastic/glass and certain card waste goes In to that.
Then I have a old celebration choccy box on the side for compostable waste to go in to, once a day it gets put on compost bin in the garden, paper/card/vegetables etc.
Any food with meat/fish waste that gets gets given to the neighbour's cat (which is once every few months as we eat very little meat), other foods get left on the lawn for pigeons to eat.
Last but not least if waste can't go to any of the above it get put in a carrier bag hung on a hook in the garden out the way and black binned (landfill) once full. Just for reference I get a carrier bag full of waste on average every 3 months.

So no smelly bin's for me in the kitchen.

We have the same now too.  Our old dog could get into any bin.

We have two bins in one, and four in the other.  The smallest bins we use for dog food - also preventing them from breaking in and keeping it out of the way.

I wouldn't go back to freestanding bins even if we didn't have a dog.  It's so much neater without them.   It doesn't matter how attractive they want to try and make them, it's still obviously a
    bin.

Whatever size bin you decide on, make sure you can get bin liners of the correct size.  I have a devil of a job, especially buying by volume - 20 Litre - rather than by size!

We have an older version of this in a drawer under the sink: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/hallbar-waste-sorting-solution-for-metod-kitchen-drawer-ventilated-light-grey-s69308926/

We have a 10L bin each for landfill, paper/card, food waste and laundry (vented), plus a 22L one for mixed recycling.  When we first got the new kitchen, I thought it would be a pain but got it anyway as it looks so much nicer not having bins out.  It quickly became second nature and I would never go back by choice.  At some point, we will switch to the updated system in the link to make the food waste bin smaller, but all of the others are about the right size for a family of 4 that is good at rubbish sorting.
