help.. missed credit card payment

good morning all,

I have a current account, a mortgage account and a credit card with Nationwide.

In Aug 2022 - i went online to find an insurance quote via go compare the market - a nationwide quote came up cheaper - so i accepted it.

a friend of mine offered to pay for the insurance (a birthday gift) - so he completed all his banking details for the payment alongside his bank details.

insurance transaction was completed successfully.

In Oct - i received an email from experian saying my credit had declined, i looked online and Nationwide had reported i missed a credit card payment.

I was very shocked as i had received no text, no email or etc.

so i called nationwide up - during the conversation - the nationwide representative advised i had missed a credit card payment in Sept - i was adamant it was an error - so we went online and i had missed a payment.

i then said but this is very unlike my account - i will get an email or text and etc.. the nationwide representative then mentioned that an email was sent to 'xyz' email address - which is my friend's email address from the go compare insurance quote / transaction.

The rep also confirmed that my telephone number had been changed also.

so i called my friend and yes he had received emails and text but since he didn't have a nationwide account and had no outstanding transactions with them.. he ignored it.

so now i have a late payment default on my credit file (which has been clean for over 10yrs as i am preparing to buy a house) - how do i progress this

I'm not sure I quite follow.  Your friend paid for your insurance and gave his bank details, presumably he paid the full year's premium?  That's fine, as far as it goes.
I can't see what that's got to do with a missed credit card payment on your account.  What does the missed payment relate to?  Not the insurance, surely, as from what you've said that was an entirely separate transaction, made from your friend's bank account?  And I don't understand why your friend would be receiving emails relating to your credit card account - did he somehow mess up the insurance payment, and inadvertently changed your credit card account contact details?
All that aside, if the missed credit card payment is genuine, then get it paid off.  A single missed payment in an otherwise unblemished history, whilst not ideal, will have negligible effect in isolation.
  • hi @ Ebe - thank you for responding.

The insurance has been fully paid for - there is no issue with that at all.

i have missed a payment (which has been paid off now) - however - Nationwide have let me know that my details were changed (my email address and mobile number).

So all of my alerts (which would have averted my missed payment) has been going to my friend's email address and phone number.

Basically asides my home address - all my contact details were changed - which i did NOT authorise and was never alerted too by Nationwide.

Nationwide have advised they will be calling me back - but as it stands - my contact number and email address are still my friend's details

i am very worried as i have worked so hard to ensure that i don't have any late payments / defaults etc to enable me purchase a home..

will be looking to buy in the new year (once the economy is a bit stable)..
  • also he did not have any of my credit card information or banking information - my only guess here is - as the details for the insurance were mine (home address / name etc) and all within the nationwide environment - something happened and 'updated my email address / phone number)

But any email concerning the missed payment would have been AFTER it was already missed, so the details change was not responsible for it.

Get your details corrected and move on - there is no mileage in trying to blame the missed payment on the mix up, however it happened, and as stated above a single late payment will have a negligible effect on an otherwise good credit history.

OK, so the main thing for now is to work with Nationwide to ascertain how/when your contact details were changed, and to get them corrected ASAP.  In fact, if you speak to them, I can't imagine it'll take long to get them corrected - you can look into the "how and why" they were changed after you've got them corrected.  Meantime, ask your friend to forward any emails/texts relating to your account to you.
And don't worry too much about a single late payment.  Yes, it's a bit galling, but really it will have a negligible effect in an otherwise well-managed payment history.
Oh, and as a slight aside, this is why getting a Direct Debit set up is a great idea - it'll mean you won't ever miss a payment again.  Ideally set it up to pay the full statement balance, but at the very least, setting up a DD for the minimum payment will prevent this kind of thing happening again.

  • at msallen - thanks for the response .. yes you are right - an email will be after the payment has been missed. however Nationwide will send a text alert prior to the payment been missed to enable you not miss a payment - the text was also missed as a result of this mix up..

thank u for your advise regarding the knock on effect of the missed payment as this was my main concern. thank you

What is odd is none of the offered insurances are provided by Nationwide. So any payment would not have been via their systems.
    What was the missed payment?

So how the details have been changed to your friends are odd.

As aside if a friend wants to do this in the future. let them transfer the funds to you and you then pay for the ins. As it is possible a auto renewal can be set up & your friend ends up paying again next year. 👍

    Life in the slow lane
  • I’m not sure this is making much sense.

In order for you to change your personal contact details with a bank like nationwide, you’d normally have to login securely to do this or phone the bank. Are you suggesting that your ‘friend’ may have secured access to your personal bank account? If so, I would change all your login details/passwords etc immediately, no matter how much of a ‘friend’ they may be.

I do not see how your friend buying insurance on your behalf bears any resemblance to you missing a payment UNLESS you have not given all the info here.
Did you pay for the insurance on your nationwide credit card with your friend agreeing to pay your credit card to the tune of the insurance amount? They could have easily done that by doing a BACS payment with the correct details obtained from a credit card statement.
If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can't, you won't.

Lodge a complaint with Nationwide about the changed details. Sounds like they could be in hot water with ICO.

Get the card paid now and tell Nationwide to change the details back, then remove the late payment markers

Also get a Direct Debit set up to pay the credit card.

And check the Nationwide app far more regularly. The Nationwide credit card will show in the app
